Congressman Daniel J. Flood announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved an application to construct 120 apartments for the elderly at a site near College Misericordia. The congressman said that project is sponsored by the Ecumenical Enterprises, Inc., a non profit religious-affiliated corporation comprised of local representatives of four religious groups: Metropolitan Lutheran Council, the Jewish Federation, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Scranton and the First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre.
It is contemplated that construction will begin on the $4.5 million project, with a possible completion date in 1981. The complex will consist of one-bedroom apartments for the elderly with subsidized rentals under the HUD Section 202-8 program of the National Housing Act. The second phase, planned for the same site, is to include a 120-bed nursing home to be financed by the Farmers Home Administration.
