Only Yesterday

The Dallas High Homecoming Queen will be chosen from seven Dallas High students at halftime in Saturday’s game. Candidates are: Lorraine Mitchell, Danielle Skoronski, Patricia Cominsky, Renee Strauser, Sarah Lewis, Amy Kowalski and Carrie Wilson.

Four members of Boy Scout Troop 232 were recently made Eagle Scouts in a ceremony held at Gate of Heaven Church Hall, Dallas. Those earning the Eagle Scout rank were: Francis X. Hoover, Samuel Wilkes, Eric Williams and E. Shane Williams.

Dr. Wallace F. Stettler, President of Wyoming Seminary, announced the recent election of William R. Mainwaring as Chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees. Mainwaring and his wife Judy are the parents of two children, Jonnell and Robert, both graduates of Wyoming Seminary. They reside in Dallas.

1979 – 30 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Fallon’s class at Gate of Heaven School were winners of the PTG membership drive. The sixth grade students achieved 100 per cent membership after the second day of school. Class members are: Maria Kane, April Petroski, Margaret Zajkowski, Danette Yanchick, Molly Parsons, Craig Scales, Joseph Minichowski, James Aikman, Pat Rismondo, Mark Young, Michael Postupak, Todd Lenahan, Sam Spencer, John Oravitz, Mark Stash and James P. McGuire.

Carole Kwasnik was crowned Homecoming Queen last Saturday at the Dallas-Meyers football game. She was escorted by William Runner.

Members of the Back Mountain National All-Star baseball team were hosted at a banquet last week at the Castle Inn, Dallas. Members of the team are: A.J. Bittner, Jim Boughton, Bill Boyle, Mike Burba, Mark Farrell, Mike Janosik, P.J. Malak, Chris Michael, Craig Rome, Gilbert Roozen, Mark Steinkirschner, Chris Wargo, Earl Weidner and Steve Wilson.

1969 – 40 YEARS AGO

The new Panorama Senior Girl Scout Troop recently organized at Harvey’s Lake, visited Woodward Cave in Center County Sunday. The girls and their leaders toured the famous caverns and then had a cookout at Woodward Cave Park. They also toured the Bucknell University campus in Lewisburg, with Mrs. Carrie Rood, former member of the Lake-Lehman faculty, conducting the tour.

In the party were: Linda Strzelcyzk, Doris Parrish, Jody Kostenbauder, Susan Fetchko, Edith Wilson, Lolly Clarke, Claire LaBarre, Diane Jones, Debbie Wortz, Susan Pekuconis and Patty Pecukonis. Leaders who accompanied the girls were Mrs. Wolf, Madeline LaBarre, Catherine Wilson and Rose Pecukonis.

Leo Woidzik, a resident of Wellington Avenue, Dallas, credits two Scranton men with saving his life last Tuesday afternoon following a boating mishap on Lake Carey. According to Mr. Woidzik, he slipped on a mat in his aluminum boat after standing up in the craft’s bow to weigh anchor. He was thrown against the boat’s side and fell backwards into the water. As he fell, he said, his feet became so entangled in the anchor’s rope that it was impossible for him to swim away from the boat. He struggled to climb back in but his efforts caused the boat to take on water. Two other fisherman heard his cries and rowed 500 feet to his aid.

1959 – 50 YEARS AGO

Shavertown Brownie Troop 115 enjoyed a hike and picnic supper at the home of Mrs. Robert Bayer on Monday, who was assisted as hostess by members of the troop committee, Mrs. Michael Bucan and Mrs. George Kromelbein.

Present were leaders Mrs. Donald Edwards and Mrs. Henry Ott Jr.; Brownies: Judy Allen, Kathie Biesel, Deborah Berlew, Carolyn Day, Joan Edwards, Barbara Tyrrell, Megan Thomas, Candy Wismer, Deborah Otto, Susan Bucan, Joan Farley, Virginia Jenkins, Ruth Lewis, Catherine Hauck, Lana Eicke, Debra Pugh, Ann Graham and Cindy Bucan.

Tuesday marked the fourth class in a series of golf lessons for women enrolled at Back Mountain Home-Makers Holiday, offered by the YWCA at the Shavertown headquarters for the YMCA.

Taking part in the lessons were: Mesdames M.U. Rumbgh, Harry Galletly, Charles Kanarr, Paul Priebe, Edwin Roth, Otto Schenk, Nathan Baer, Robert Wade, Raymond Parson, William Krimmel, Morton Hewitt, Lawrence Newhart, William Reid, Robert Morgan, George Downs and Owen Dieble. Instructor is Mrs. Robert T. Lesser.

1949 – 60 YEARS AGO

The Frank M. Hemelright award for community service was presented last night to Harry L. Ohlman at a joint meeting of Dallas Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs at Irem Temple Country Club.

Selection of the outstanding citizen of the Back Mountain Region was made on Monday night at Dallas Methodist Church by forty representatives of Back Mountain civic, fraternal and church organizations. In announcing the selection of Mr. Ohlman, the committee pointed to his work in helping to establish Back Mountain Memorial Library, his activity in Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire Company and his enthusiastic support of all community ventures.

Two thousand persons attended the open house at First National Bank on Saturday and viewed the many changes made to the quarters of their community bank during the summer months. Everybody was interested in the Drive-in deposit window, the night depository, the vault with rows of gleaming safe deposit boxes and the pleasing d�cor of the main banking room, bookkeeper’s department and directors’ room.

1939 – 70 YEARS AGO

A delightful evening filled with bright laughter and clean entertainment is waiting for you at the Lake-Lehman High School auditorium next Tuesday, when members of the Senior Class raise the curtain on a new domestic comedy entitled “Polish Papa” written by Clark Willard. The cast, which is under the direction of Miss Margaret M. Dunn, faculty advisor, is composed of the following: Josephine Hummell, Elizabeth Sorber, Charles Kern, Richard Williams, Florence Melusky, Otis Allen, Leo Johnson, Ruth Stevenson, Robert Payne and Ruth Rogers.

At the James R. Oliver car dealership in Dallas, a brand new 1940 Hudson Six sold for $670.
