The Dallas Middle School Student Council, under the guidance of Miss Norine Amesbury, recently held its annual election of officers for the 1989-1990 school year. Steve Lieberman was elected president; Jill Kowalski, vice president; Karen Wisnieski, corresponding secretary; Becky Yurko, treasurer; and Kathy Delinsky, recording secretary.
Country Scissors has announced its grand opening at 163 N. Main St., Shavertown. Now a true full service, one-stop salon staffed by professionals, Country Scissors features: expanded hair service area; new complete nail and hand care center; a new state of the art facial and skin care center; and a private tanning room.
Those present at the grand opening included Lois Wright, Mrs. Ray Lowery, Jane Lowery, Michael Lowery, Ray Lowery, Lawrence Pace, Jeffrey Pace, Donna May, Deanna Knorr, Helen Malay, Kathy Maher and Kristine Knopki.
Sophomores in Kit Karuza’s class at Dallas High School are taking part in a stock buy and sell project. The students will raise funds to purchase stock, then dabble in buying and selling. Participating are: Kristin Riegel, Tricia Michael, Patty Kroll, Martha Lawrence, Mike Ramirez, Jeff Getz, Scott Stephenson, Nancie Fitch and Joe Clemson.
Members of the Dallas High School golf team who defeated Nanticoke golfers to take the Wyoming Valley Conference title include: Jim McDonald, Jim Smith, Jeff Balmer, Cameron Spivey, Caleb Greissman and Mark Hughes. Charles Preece is golf coach.
A group of seniors from Dallas and Lake-Lehman were guests of College Misericordia recently for the college’s first annual Commuter Day. The local students were among some 120 students from area high schools who participated in the program, which was designed to provide them with information on Misericordia’s programs. Local participants included Beth Cooper, Lehman, Marilyn Walko, Dallas, Candy Cooper, Lehman, Judy Reese, Lisa Naugle and Kathy Monaco, all of Lehman.
A grand old lady of journalism, after 30 years to The Dallas Post, has stepped down from her editorship.
Mrs. T.M.B. Hicks, 77, known to followers throughout Pennsylvania and the nation affectionately as Hix, became editor emeritus of The Post last week, owner and publisher Henry Null 4th announced.
Lillian K. Rosenberg, Sutton Road, Trucksville, is presenting an exhibition of her paintings in oil, acrylics and batik in the Conyngham Art Gallery of Wilkes College, this week through Sunday.
This exhibition by Mrs. Rosenberg is one of many she has presented over the past few years. A graduate of Boston University, she has interested herself in art expression ever since and has won a unique place in the art community locally. Recently, Mrs. Rosenberg and her art were the subject of a feature article in LaRevue Moderne, published in Paris, France. Her work has been exhibited in exhibits along the Eastern seaboard and last year, in a one-man show at Wilkes College.
She is the wife of Dr. Samuel Rosenberg, chairman, Department of Commerce and Finance of the college.
A queen will be chosen from the senior class to reign over homecoming festivities at Dallas Senior High School this weekend. The student will be crowned at the football game between Dallas and Nanticoke Saturday.
Seven girls have been elected by members of the senior class. They are Judy Allen, Barbra Connelly, Roberta Gilbert, Debbie Hartman, Virginia Jenkins, Karen Kennedy and Caroline Stout.
The team from Beaumont won the championship of the Bi-County Baseball League by defeating Mehoopany two straight in the finals. Outstanding batters were Mel and Larry Crispell and Bob Bellas.
Other team members: Percy McMillan, Alex Wilson, Charles Everetts, Carl Sickler, Herb Goodwin, Harry Derhammer, Bob Harris, Carl Crispell, Carl Straley and Dick Searfoss.
Dress is optional at Harvey’s Lake Woman’s Service Club Dance at O’Connell’s Twin Lakes, Friday night. Mrs. Carl Schreiner, Jr., general chairman, is assisted by these chairmen: decorations, Mrs. Thomas Garrity, Mrs. Joseph Rauch and Mrs. Edward Kanasky; reservations, Mrs. Robert Payne; prizes, Mrs. Elwood Whitesell, Mrs. Malcolm Nelson; tickets, Mrs. Grace Martin and Miss Pauline Davis; and publicity, Mrs. Donald Smith.
Cleo Carey, daughter of Mrs. Karlene Carey, Pioneer Avenue, Shavertown, has been awarded first prize in a beautiful child contest held recently at Dallas 5 and 10 Cent Store. The little three year old blond received a large hand painted portrait of the prize winning picture.
At a meeting held Wednesday afternoon, five new members were introduced to the Back Mountain Library Book Club. New members are Mrs. Gordon Yetter, Mrs. Charles Dewees, Mrs. Paul Phillips, Mrs. Ornan Lamb and Mrs. William Griffith.
Movies playing at the Himmler Theater, Dallas, included “A Girl From Jones Beach” starring Ronald Reagan; “The Fountain Head” starring Gary Cooper and “Canadian Pacific” starring Randolph Scott and Jane Wyatt.
Four boys who were said to have smashed 33 windows in the tabernacle at Outlet, Harvey’s Lake, have been rounded up by the Harvey’s Lake police department and probably will be sent to Kis Lyn. The boys, all about 14 years of age, had no motive but mischief, according to police, who say two of the boys have been in trouble before.
Mrs. Thomas Graham and Mrs. Ernest Johnson of Shavertown had a miraculous escape from serious injury on Monday afternoon when their car was overturned after a collision at Pioneer Avenue and West Center Street, Shavertown, near the Methodist Church.
According to Justice of the Peace Harold Lloyd, who investigated, the women were turning from Center Street onto Pioneer Avenue and had stopped when a large sedan driven by Michael Ostrowski of Swoyersville, came down the hill and struck them. The car carrying the women turned over and was resting on its side when rescuers helped the women climb out. No one was arrested, pending investigation.
