BULFORD - Dorothy L., 88, of Sweet Valley, died Friday, August 22, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born January 2, 1920 in Kingston, she and her husband, Roland, owned and operated the former Foothills Coffee Shop, Bakery and Grocery Store prior to her retirement.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Louise (Sikora) Bulford, Sweet Valley; sister, Grace J. Cureton, Riverton, N.J.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

DAVIES - Irene V., 87, of Church Street, Dallas, died Monday, September 1, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Dallas, she graduated from Dallas High School and Nesbitt Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Kingston, and was an operating room nurse for many years.

She was a member of the Dallas United Methodist Church since 1949 and was active with the Couples Club. She was a member and served as secretary of the Alumni Association for Nesbitt Memorial Hospital School Nursing. She was also a member of the Audubon Association.

Surviving are her son, Bruce S. III, Bolton, Conn.; sister, Margaret Baker, Spokane, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

DUNGEY - Dana P., 87, formerly of Dallas, died Sunday, September 7, 2008 in The Easton Home, Easton.

Born January 21, 1921 in Kingston, she was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Dallas, where she served as an Elder. She was also a 1939 graduate of Kingston High School.

Surviving is her daughter, Carol Devlin, Easton; son, Robert, Dallas; sister, Mary Bisher, Shephardstown, W.Va.; nieces and nephews.

HETRICK - Sara. E., 103, formerly of Dallas, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Tiffany Court, Kingston.

Born in Halafax, Pa., she graduated from Halafax High School and earned her RN from Harrisburg General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse for many years with several local hospitals.

Surviving are daughters, Sally Hetrick, New Hampshire; and Amy Stocker, N.C.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A 1940 graduate of Larksville High School where he was the class valedictorian, he earned his bachelor’s degree from King’s College and his master’s degree at the University of Scranton.

LEISER – Dolly, 99, a former resident of the Back Mountain, died on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

Born in Birdsboro, she was a graduate of Birdsboro High School and worked as a secretary at the Reading Times newspaper. While a resident of the Back Mountain, she lived on Elmcrest Drive in Dallas and then at Newberry Estates.

LUNGER - James E., 85, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at St. Ann’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

Born in Fishing Creek Township on April 1, 1923, he was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Penelec for more than 35 years. He was active in the Tunkhannock Baseball Association, serving as coach for Turrell’s Little League team for many years.

Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Donahue, Gahanna, Ohio; one grandchild; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald, Falls; Robert, Dalton; Vernon, West Chester; Leo, Shrewsbury; and Furman, Jr., Springville; sisters, Annabelle Sands, Tunkhannock; and Margaret Roberts, South Point, Ohio; nieces and nephews.

McANDREW- John F.P. “Frank,” 84, of Dallas, died Monday, September 1, 2008 at home.

Born in Scranton, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, class of 1942, and the University of Scranton, class of 1949, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

He started his long distinguished military career when he entered World War II in January 1943. He served with the 480th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion and General George S. Patton’s Third Army. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge and other European operations. He was honorably discharged in December 1947 and became a member of the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division. He served on active duty with the National Guard until retiring in 1984 where he was a personnel officer. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (5), the first in the state to receive that rank.

He was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas, and the Daddow Isaac American Legion Post 672, Dallas.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Tuman McAndrew; children, Dr. Frank T., Galesburg, Ill.; John J., Shickshinny; Rosemary Hozempa and Christine Grieves, both of Dallas; Paul C., Downingtown; and 14 grandchildren.

MacDOUGALL - Doris, 64, of Oakdale Road, Hunlock Creek, died Friday, September 5, 2008 at Heritage House Hospice Unit.

Born January 30, 1944 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a graduate of Harter High School, West Nanticoke.

Surviving are her husband, Gary; her mother, Ann Ostopick, West Nanticoke; son, Curtis, Hunlock Creek; two grandchildren; sister, Barbara Coffee, Mountain Top; brother, John (Jackie) Ostopick, Shickshinny; nieces and nephews.

PEASE - Francisco David, 17, of Montrose and formerly of Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born July 14, 1991 in Quito, Ecuador, he was a student at Tunkhannock High School until the spring of 2008 and would have been a junior at the Montrose Area High School. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Montrose, where his late grandfather and adopted father was the former rector.

He was a staff member in training at Camp Lackawanna where he attended camp for the past 10 years and was a previous member of the junior varsity track and field team at Tunkhannock High School. In the past, he was involved with midget football and wrestling.

Surviving are his father, John S. Pease; aunt and guardian, Sandra Darde, Montrose; uncle, Joseph Darde, Montrose; brothers, Dominic and Simon Pease, Tunkhannock; grandmother, Vivian Pease, South Montrose; special friend, Kenna Bresser, Scranton; and cousins

POST - Richard C., VMD, 81, formerly of Kingston, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at The Village at Greenbriar, Dallas.

Born in Trucksville on July 9, 1927, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University where he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. In 1954, he graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

After graduation, he practiced for a period in Hanover, Pa. where he served as staff equine veterinarian with the Hanover Shoe Farms. Dr. Post served during World War II, serving both in the Naval Corps and later as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. He then returned to the Back Mountain and, in 1956, established the Back Mountain Veterinary Hospital, from which he retired in 1992.

He was a member of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Veterinary Association, Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association, Alpha Psi, a professional veterinary fraternity and Phi Zeta, an honorary veterinary fraternity of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a former board member of the SPCA of Luzerne County, was active with the Lehman Horse Show for many years and with the Back Mountain Kennel Club.

He was a 50-year member of the George M. Dallas Lodge 531, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg; the Irem Temple, where he was a former member of the Clown Unit and where he served as 54th Illustrious Potentate in 1988; Royal Order of the Jesters Court 154 and the Dallas American Legion. He was a past president of Dallas Rotary, a member of the Westmoreland Club and Eagles Mere Country Club.

Surviving are a sister, Janet Phillips; a niece and a nephew; and longtime companion, Sandra J. Knouse.

SLAFF - Dr. James, 54, died Friday, September 5, 2008 at Shands Hospital, Gainesville FL, after a lengthy illness.

Born January 21, 1954 in Wilkes-Barre, he graduated from Blair Academy as valedictorian of his class in 1971. He went on to Yale University and graduated cum laude in 1975. He graduated from University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1979 and completed his medical internship at University of Florida College of Medicine.

He maintained a clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in Key West, FL from 1987 to 1998. In 1999, he returned to Gainesville, joined the teaching faculty at Shands Hospital of University of Florida College of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor of Gastroenterology and became the medical director of several Gainesville nursing homes.

Surviving are his daughter, Ashley, South Boston, VA; two brothers, Jonathan, New York, NY; and Richard, Shavertown; his long- time companion, Dana Welch, Earlton, FL.

SLATER - Michele M., of Washington Park Road, Tunkhannock, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at her home.

Born in San Leandro, Calif., on March 9, 1971, she had been employed by Compassionate Health Care of Dunmore and ARC of Tunkhannock.

Surviving are her mother, Judith M. Clement, Tunkhannock; daughter, Cheyenne M. Seff, Terrytown, N.Y.; brother Todd Slater, California.

STENGER - Bina Garrity, 83, of Harveys Lake, died Saturday September 6, 2008 at Hospice Community Care, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Harveys Lake on Feb. 22, 1925, she resided there her entire life and was a resident of 118 Lakeside Drive for 53 years. For the last four years, she resided at Meadows Manor Assisted Living in Dallas.

She had been a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake, for 83 years where she served many positions on the Altar and Rosary Society. She held the office of judge of elections for 36 years for the Harveys Lake Borough and was continually re-elected until her retirement from that position. She was a graduate of College Misericordia.

Surviving are her children, John (Jay) IV, Lakeland, Fla.; Patrick G., Lake Monticello, Va.; Annmarie Stenger Narcum, Harveys Lake; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

THOMPSON - Sharon L., of Lemon Creek Road, Tunkhannock, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at home.

Born in Scranton on May 23, 1936, she was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School, Class of 1955. Prior to her retirement, she was a bus driver’s aide.

She was a member of the Lake Carey Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Tyler Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Tunkhannock American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Lymanville Ladies Guild.

Surviving are sons, Terry , Tunkhannock; Wayne, Washington Township; daughters, Dawn Rogers, Tunkhannock; Shyril and Kelly Thompson, both of Washington Township; Billie Jackson, Meshoppen; brother, Louis Parrish, Montrose; sisters, June Sherwood, South Auburn; Loretta Dilmore, Lemon; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

WOODLING - Vivian R., 92, of Hoover Road, Lake Township, died Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Surviving are children, Barry E., Gillette, Wyo.; Marily Lake, Lakeland, Fla.; Thomas A., Martinsburg; Timm E., Naples, Fla.; Susan E. Woodling, Lake Township; sister, Charlotte Winter, Lewisburg; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
