OBITUARIES

CHIPEGO - Bernard E., Jr., 56, of Lehman, died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Hospice Community Care inpatient unit of Geisinger South Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born May 31, 1953 in Kingston, he was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and attended King’s College. He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Navy.

Prior to his retirement in 2004, he was employed by the Department of Corrections for 27 years at SCI Dallas and SCI Waymart. Following his retirement, he worked at Dallas Centre Hardware Store, Dallas.

Surviving are his mother, Violet Rutkowski Chipego, of Swoyersville; his wife of 30 years, the former Carol Guilford; children, James Higgins, of Sussex, N.J.; Amy Higgins, of Plains Township; Matthew, of Noxen; and Jonathan, of Trucksville; five grandchildren; sister, Barbara Brown, of Lewes, Del.; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

CORBY - Irene S., 96, formerly of Evans Falls, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Golden Living Center, Tunkhannock.

Surviving are her children, William, Walter and Charles, all of Tunkhannock; Harriet Burkholder, of Leola; and Alice B. Singer, of Rome; stepchildren, Ruth Greenley and Fern Kromelbein, of Tunkhannock; and Malcolm Corby, of Meshoppen; 22 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Boyer and Bertha Scott, both of Pittston; and Florence Hunt, of Binghamton, N.Y.

Memorial donations to Interfaith Friends or Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen in Tunkhannock.

HUTCHINS - Allen L., of Dendron Drive, Tunkhannock, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

Born in Meshoppen on September 18, 1938, he was an Air Force veteran and had worked at the Proctor and Gamble plant in Mehoopany for 18 years. Later, he was employed by National Freight and Crete Trucking Company. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Sandra Jagger Hutchins; sons, Daniel, of Dublin, Ga.; Dean, Timothy and Kevin, all of Tunkhannock; and Keith, of Dallas; a daughter, Jennifer Bisignani, of Scranton; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Dzuba, of Roseville, Pa.; and a brother, John, of Dallas.

JURYSTA - Maria “Mary,” 85, formerly of Dallas, most recently a guest at the Laurels Health and Rehabilitation Center, Kingston, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born on September 5, 1923, in Kiev, Ukraine, she immigrated to the United States in 1949 with her husband and her daughter.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed for 35 years by the former Ann-Will Garment, Kingston.

She was a member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, Edwardsville, the St. Vladimir’s Women’s Society and the church choir.

Surviving are her daughter, Olga Baettig, Brick, N.J.; two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

SCHOLLENBERGER - Dorothy M., 89, formerly of Wyoming and Orange, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas.

Born in Hamburg, Germany on May 3, 1920, she became a U.S. citizen when she was young.

She graduated from Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. She worked in the grocery store in Orange for many years and for Social Security for 20 years until her retirement.

She was a member of the Cheerio class of the Orange Methodist Church and the Harmony Chapter No. 58 Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her son, Thomas G., Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Joan Yanovitch, of Lords Valley; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

TREGAN - Andrew, 76, Kunkle, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Valley Crest Nursing Home.

Born in Luzerne on July 7, 1932, he attended Luzerne High School. He was a Veteran of the Korean War.

He was employed at Valley Crest, retiring in 1999.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, June Boston Tregan; daughter, Helen McGee, Dallas; sons, Frank, Tunkhannock; Jim, Dallas; four grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Reilly, Luzerne; brother, David, Luzerne; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations to the Kunkle Fire Department or the Kunkle United Methodist Church.
