ALVES - Sister Mary Corinne, RSM, 98, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at Mercy Center, Dallas.
The former Mary Adelaide Alves, she was born Oct. 1, 1911 in Plaisance, Guyana, South America. She received her elementary and high school education in Plaisance and Georgetown, Guyana, formerly British Guiana.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas on Feb. 2, 1937, becoming the first Guyanese Sister to enter the Sisters of Mercy at Dallas. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from College Misericordia and taught for a total of 39 years.
In 1978, Sister Corinne became a pastoral minister at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Georgetown, Guyana. She retired from active duty in 1991 and returned to Mercy Center, Dallas, to the prayer ministry.
Surviving are her brothers, Michael Basil, Miami, Fla.; John Patrick, Surrey, England; several nieces and nephews; and Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community.

DAVIS - Doris R., 86, of Dallas, formerly of West Pittston, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 in Greenbriar Estates, Dallas.
Born in Pittston on Dec. 6, 1922, she graduated from Pittston High School and was a former member of First Baptist Church, Pittston.
Surviving are sons, Donald, San Ramon, Calif.; William, Elkins Park; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
DEMBOWSKI - Frank S., 88, of Dallas, formerly of West Pittston and Kingston, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at the Mercy Center, Dallas.
Born July 21, 1920 in Nanticoke, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country honorably during World War II with the 449th Anti-Aircraft Battalion. During his time of service to his country, he was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead and a World War II Victory Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on November 13, 1945, he attained the rank of Sergeant.
Before his retirement in 1993, he worked for Prudential Insurance Company for 31 years. After retirement, he worked as a ranger and starter for club events at the Fox Hill Country Club.
He was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church, West Pittston, and its Holy Name Society, where he served as past president. He was also a former member of its Ushers Club, a member and past president of the Pittston Lions Club, a member of the AMVETS, Nanticoke, and the Wilkes-Barre Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also volunteered his time at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township.
Surviving are his children, F. David, Kingston Township; Marilyn Cerase, Alfonse, Virginia Beach, Va.; many nieces and nephews.

JUDGE - John J. Sr., 88, formerly of Shavertown and Zephryhills, Fla., died Jan. 29, 2009 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.
Born on Jan. 9, 1921 in Wilkes-Barre, he had attended Westmoreland schools. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Natona Mills, Dallas, as a dye house operator and later in the maintenance department.
He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army 8th Air Corps in England. He was a past member of the Dallas American Legion and a member of St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, the former Anne M. Hohol; sons, John, Hunlock Creek; William, Harveys Lake; and Eugene, Rochester, N.Y.; brother, Martin T., Wyoming; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

KOWALESKI - Marion, 89, formerly of Shavertown, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 in River Street Manor.
Surviving are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
ORF - Henry S., 97, of Shavertown, died Dec. 23, 2008.
Born on May 9, 1911 in Wilkes-Barre, he was an Army veteran of World War II. He distinguished himself in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and was active for almost three years of battle, including the Invasion of Anzio, Italy.
He was a paint technician for Motor Twins Ford for more than 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Parish of Saint Therese in Shavertown and the American Legion Daddow-Isaacs Post 672 in Dallas.
Surviving are children, Thomas, Dallas; and Miriam Stone, Wyomissing; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
ROMAN - Phyllis M., 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Nov. 20, 1922 in Ithaca, N.Y., she was a graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1941. She had been employed at the G. Young Insurance Agency and then worked as a secretary and babysitter for Wilson H. Flock during the early stages of the agency. Later, she was secretary to the membership secretary of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA.
She was active in Cub Scouting and Girl Scouting and had held a number of offices, including president of the Dallas Women of the Kiwanis. She was a member of Saint Therese’s Church, Shavertown.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Vincent D. Roman, P.E.; sons, Vincent T. Roman, M.D., Tulsa, Okla.; James J. Roman, Kingston; daughters, Mary Lu Tristran, Dover, Del.; Therese M. Jabon, Chicago, Ill.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
WILLIAMS - William R., VMD, 75, of Tunkhannock, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 in Ann’s Grove Personal Care Home, Tunkhannock.
Born in Plymouth on Feb. 5, 1933, he was a 1949 graduate of Tunkhannock High School, where he was valedictorian, and a graduate of Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania Veterinarian Medical School.
After graduation, he was employed by a local veterinarian and worked as a federal meat inspector for several years. He was the founder and former owner of the Sugar Hollow Trout Hatchery.
Surviving are sons, Dr. Kendal P., Philadelphia; Dr Daniel C., Tunkhannock; and Jonathan K., Ecuador; brothers, Thomas L. and Neil R., both of Tunkhannock; and four grandchildren.
