BOLONIS - Catherine H., formerly of Gates Road, Shavertown, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Born October 3, 1912 in Swoyersville, she attended local schools and was a graduate of the Empire Beauty School, Wilkes-Barre. For many years, she owned and operated Kay’s Beauty Salon, Bennett Street, Luzerne.

She was a member of the former St. Ann’s Parish, Luzerne.

Surviving are daughters, Louise Caglarcan, Wilmington, N.C.; Attorney Veronica Steadle Kisailus, Laurel Run; Audrey Bragg, Riverdale, Md.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

BROWN - Evan (Mike) R. Jr., 77, of Gypsy Lane, Dallas, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and, for many years, was employed as a truck driver for Halls Motor Freight, formerly of Mountain Top, and United Rehabilitation Services, of Wilkes-Barre.

He was a club leader for the Riding HO 4H Club, of Idetown, and a member of the Teamsters Union Local 401, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are his wife, the former Geraldine Novak; children, Michael, Red Rock; Randy, Texas; Terry and Evan R. III, both of Dallas; Marcy Jo Perry, Sweet Valley; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Garris, Bushkill; Janet Yahraes, Wilkes-Barre; several nieces and nephews.

BUCKLEY - Edward M., 93, a former postmaster in Dallas, died on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008.

Born in Plymouth Township, he was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School, Plymouth, and attended Pennsylvania Wharton School and Wilkes University.

Before World War II, he worked for Beneficial Finance Company, Wilkes-Barre. After the war, he was employed by Wilkes-Barre Traction Co. and the Veterans Administration when it first opened in Wilkes-Barre.

He worked for the U.S. Post Office from 1948 to 1974, was appointed postmaster by President John F. Kennedy and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He was the first in Northeastern Pennsylvania to be promoted from clerk to postmaster.

After retiring from postmaster, he was appointed a court officer by Luzerne County Courts for the Honorable Peter Paul Olszewski, retiring in 1984.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II for four years, attaining the rank of Tec Sergeant. He served in the Asiatic and Pacific area and in Japan.

He was a past commander of the American Legion, Dallas, past president of the board of directors and past president of the Dallas Lions Club. He helped organize the Dallas Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Grand Knight. He was a member of the VFW Post 283, Kingston and charter member of Gate of Heaven parish. He was an honorary member of the Notre Dame Club of Hanover Township.

Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Ritchie; son, James, Dallas; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Cordray, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ann Brunick, Plymouth.

FERRE - Eleanor Louise, 95, formerly of the Back Mountain, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008.

Born in Lehman, she graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1932 and from Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. in 1936. She was employed as a clinical pathologist at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital and also at Sloan-Kettering and New Rochelle Hospitals in New York.

Surviving are six nieces and nephews.

GOLDSMITH - William M., 66, of Dallas, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008.

Born April 11, 1942 in Wilkes-Barre, he was a resident of Dallas Township for the past 25 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and, prior to retiring, was employed as a truck driver by Letica Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Ina; children, William Jr. and Michael, both of Dallas; Karen Simms, Plains; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Margaret Lyons, Edwardsville; Helen Fuller, Washington; brothers, John, Florida; Charles, Nanticoke; nieces and nephews.

GOULD - Walter E. “Wally,” 91, of Swoyersville, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008.

Born March 23, 1917 in Quincy, Mass., he was raised in Boston, Mass. and later moved to Bridgeport, Conn. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 20 years as an engineer for the Balf Company, Bridgeport, Conn.

In 1987, Wally moved to Harveys Lake and was instrumental in restoring Little League fields in the Back Mountain area. He was also an umpire for Little League baseball games in the Back Mountain.

He was a lifetime member of the Springfield Ski Club.

Surviving are his wife, the former Marie France; children, Jeffrey and Jennifer Gould, both of Georgia; step-children, Pamela Rinaldi, Hackettstown, N.J.; Anthony Tarreto, Larksville; and David Tarreto, Nazareth.

GRIFFITH - Dorothy “Dot”, 88, of Trucksville, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Born February 11, 1920 in Exeter, she was a 1938 graduate of Kingston Township High School.

She was a member of the Shavertown United Methodist Church, including the Kings Daughters, Mary Circle and the Brown Baggers, and was a charter member of the Dallas Women’s Club.

Surviving are her son, Richard John; son, Robert A., Montrose; son, Reverend Roger E., Shavertown; and daughter, Barbara Griffith Roberts, Dallas; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

LAMOREAUX - Sandra Lyn, 41, of Harris Pond Road, Sweet Valley, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008.

Born June 23, 1967 in the Fort Sill Army Hospital, Lawton, Oklahoma, she was a member of the Bloomingdale United Methodist, Bloomingdale.

Surviving is her husband, William M. Lamoreaux Sr.; sons, William Jr., Marionville; Richard, Sweet Valley; her parents, Richard and Barbara Kirschner, Hunlock Creek; and two uncles.

MORAN - Dorothy Guerra, 92, of Provincial Towers in Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008.

Born February 15, 1916 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a graduate of St. Ann’s Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from College Misericordia. She completed further studies at Penn State University, King’s College and Wilkes University.

Prior to retirement, she taught at Dallas Senior High School. She was previously employed by Radio Service Corporation and Luzerne County Office of Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America; Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Honor Society of Graduates of Catholic Colleges, Wyoming Valley Women’s Club; Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered as a Pink Lady, Luzerne County and Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Associations, National Education Association; Ladies of Charity; and the Women of the Wilkes-Barre Lions Club.

Surviving are a sister, Marie Guerra Kennedy, Shaker Heights, Ohio; brother, John B. Guerra, Esq., Cleveland Heights, Ohio; two nieces; a nephew; and cousins.

NORRIS - Robert P., 71, of Hillside Road, Shavertown, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Born in 1937, he was a 1955 graduate of Lehman High School and served in the U.S. Army. After graduation, he worked at Kanaar Corp. machine shop and Pulverman Inc. For the last 30 years, he dabbled in roofing. After retiring, he drove a minivan for Jim and Ginger Spencer.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia Brown, Shavertown; son, Charles, at home; brother, William, Shavertown; one niece and one nephew; two great-nieces and one great-nephew; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

RACE - Mary Jane, 80, of Noxen, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Born in Noxen, she was a graduate of the Beaumont High School. She was employed in the Noxen dress factories for many years. She was a member of the Noxen United Methodist Church where she also taught adult Sunday School. She was involved with the Noxen Community Choir and a volunteer librarian at the Schenck Memorial Library in Noxen.

Surviving are her daughter; Christine Montross, Noxen; son, David, Noxen; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, William F. Munkatchy, Noxen; sister, Eunice Haverick, East Stroudsburg; and nieces and nephews.

SMITH - Delphine S., 83, of North Towanda, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008.

Born August 3, 1925 in Shavertown, she was a graduate of Kingston High School. In early years, she was employed by Pomeroy’s Department Store in Wilkes-Barre. She was later employed by Sylvania Electric and then E.I. DuPont in Towanda until her retirement.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Towanda, VFW Post No. 1568 Auxiliary, Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 Auxiliary and the Towanda Country Club.

Surviving are three grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Stachnik, Luzerne; sisters, Helen Riley, Florida; Irene Arledge, Dallas; Connie Peters, Tunkhannock; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

WILLIAMS - Harry Jr., 79, of Harveys Lake died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008.

Born May 29, 1929 in Larksville, he was a graduate of Kingston High School as well as Penn State University, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering.

Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a Sales Manager for Lorillard Tobacco, St Louis. He was later employed by Bonner Chevrolet in the sales department. He was currently employed by Emmanuel Bus Lines as a driver for the Dallas School District.

He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Irem Temple of Dallas and a member of the Irem Golf Association.

Surviving are his wife, the former Pamela Ward; two daughters, Erika Gustus of Mount Carmel; and Valerie, at home; a grandson, a niece and nephews.

WINNIE - Ernest C., of Bartron Road, Tunkhannock, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008.

Born in Meshoppen on June 21, 1918, he attended the Meshoppen schools and was a master sergeant in the Army, serving in Pearl Harbor during the invasion by the Japanese.

He was employed as manager of the Austin Poultry Farm for 20 years and later became employed by the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department. He also served as chief of police for Tunkhannock borough from 1967 to 1979.

He attended the Eaton Baptist Church in Tunkhannock.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Grosvenor; a daughter, Memory Arrowood, Mehoopany and Sebring, Fla.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
