Each class in Pre-K3 through eighth-grade selected a country. The classes learned a minimum of 10 facts on the country and created a fact board.

In addition, every student’s parents were responsible for cooking or buying an appetizer, main dish or dessert from the country represented by their child’s class for the dinner.

“We did this as one of our marketing fundraisers,” said Myrna Cantando, a parent of a Gate of Heaven student and a member of the school’s marketing committee. “We tried to make it an educational one. This is a really nice way to raise money for our school and get everybody involved.”

The classes chose the following countries: Pre-K3 and Pre-K4, India; kindergarten, the Middle East and Lebanon; first-grade, Mexico; second-grade, Italy; third-grade, China; fourth-grade, Japan; fifth-grade, Ireland; sixth-grade, Poland; seventh-grade, Greece; and eighth-grade, United States of America.

Students who owned ethnic costumes representing anywhere in the world were asked to wear them to the dinner. Door prizes were also awarded to randomly-selected people at the event. Children received puzzles, games and toys and adults received items that correspond to the 10 featured countries.

Businesses and community members also sponsored the dinner for $100 each. They are Thirty-One Lake Street, Dallas; The Peking Chef, Dallas; Dino’s Pizzeria, Dallas; Asaki Hibachi and Sushi, Shavertown; Connor’s Grillroom, Dallas; CK Treats, Dallas; Overbrook Bar and Grill, Dallas; Mamma Maria’s Restaurant, Philadelphia; Leggio’s Restaurant, Plains Township; Unifilt Corporation, Wilkes-Barre; Dr. Raymond Khoudary and Dr. John Cantando.
