Family Service Association will honor James Gallagher

Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania (FSA of NEPA) will hold its 118th annual meeting at noon on Monday, Sept. 9 at the East Mountain Inn.


This year’s honoree for the agency’s Albert N. Danoff Trustees Humanitarian Award is James Gallagher, former president of Family Service Association and current trustee of the organization.


Also being honored is Robert Silvi, Director of Human Resources at Penguin Random House and Trustee of FSA NEPA, who will be awarded the agency’s Community Leader of the Year Award.


Gallagher became involved with FSA NEPA in 1981, representing the community at large serving on the agency’s Program Advocacy Committee. Shortly thereafter, he joined the FSA Board of Directors and over the next 30 years served in various capacities, including chairing numerous committees, as well as holding board officer positions of treasurer, secretary and vice president.


A graduate of Wilkes University and Northwestern University Graduate Trust School in Chicago, Gallagher began working for what eventually became First Eastern Bank in 1968. He was named Assistant Vice President in 1972 and Vice President in 1974. He worked in the bank’s Credit and Commercial Lending area, but spent most of his career in the Trust Department of the bank which eventually merged with PNC Financial in 1994. Gallagher served as the Wilkes-Barre Trust and Financial Services area group manager until his retirement in 2009.


He has been married to the former Deborah Hartman, of Dallas, for 40 years and has two daughters, Kristi and Melissa, as well as two grandchildren, Grace and Ian; all of whom live in Downingtown.


allagher is a past member of the Lehman Golf Club and Irem Golf Club and a current member of the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club.


Gallagher has served on various fundraising committees for Wilkes University, King’s College, The United Way of Wyoming Valley, St. Vincent DePaul Kitchen and the American Heart Association. He is a member of George M. Dallas Lodge, The Irem Shrine Association, and the Estate Planning Council of Northeastern Pa.
