Mr. and Mrs. Mark A. Umphred, Wilkes-Barre, were honored by their family and friends for their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise dinner party hosted at the Wyoming Valley Country Club in Hanover Township by their children, Mark Jr., Michael and John Umphred.
Among the congratulatory messages received from relatives and friends were special anniversary greetings from Pope Benedict XVI, President Barack Obama, United States Senator Robert P. Casey Jr., Pennsylvania State Governor Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski and Wilkes-Barre City Mayor Thomas Leighton.
The couple was married in Blessed Sacrament Church, Miners Mills, by the late Rev. T. J. McCormack on Oct. 13, 1962. After raising their family in the Back Mountain, they returned to Miners Mills to make their home.
Mrs. Umphred, the former Maureen A. McHugh, Miners Mills, was a registered nurse from the Mercy School of Nursing. She worked in trauma rooms in New York City hospitals before raising her sons. She retired in June of 2000 after spending 21 years as the school nurse at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School, Kingston.
Mr. Umphred retired from Offset Paperback Mfrs. Inc., Dallas, in December of 2001 after 32 years of service. He held positions from color separator to plant manager, retiring as the director of pre-press.
Active members of St. Benedict Parish in Parsons, Mark and Maureen have enjoyed many years traveling the United States as well as most of Europe, before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Both members at Wyoming Valley Country Club, they continue to pursue together their passion for golf. A passion exceeded only by their love for one another and their family, especially grandchildren, Tyler, Nicholas, Andrew and Rachel.
