WILKES-BARRE – When Matt Kravitz went out very fast at the start of the King's 5K Run on Saturday at Kirby Park, spectators were saying, He's going out too fast. He's going to be the rabbit. It's only a matter of time before he caves.

That didn't happen.

Kravitz led a field of 50 runners and scored a victory, breaking the tape in 18 minutes, 3 seconds. The 14-year-old from Moscow outran second-place finisher Tony Korch, 52, of Nanticoke by 11 seconds. Jared Kotsko, 18, of Mountain Top finished third, 18 seconds behind Korch.

Kravitz, who runs track and cross country for North Pocono High School as a freshman, nearly won the race in wire-to-wire fashion. But he made a wrong turn on the course and relinquished the lead – but not for long.

I went off course (just before 2 miles into the race) and lost about 20 seconds, Kravitz said. That's when (Korch) took over the lead. He had about 20 meters on me. But once I got back on course, I surged and regained the lead. After that, I took control. I kept the pace and actually increased my lead late in the race.

Kravitz said he trains about 48 miles with the Trojans on school days. And he runs – depending on the weather – another 7 miles on weekends.

Deedra Porfirio, 36, of West Pittston won top female honors easily in wire-to-wire fashion with a sixth-place overall finish in 19:52. She actually finished two spots below her training partner, Mike McAndrew, 52, of Avoca (who finished in 18:36).

He's the reason I win races, Porfirio said. We train together. He pushes me. He is my inspiration.

Sherri Yelen, 40, of Kingston finished second among the women in 21:15. Jen Stec, 37, of Mocanaqua was the third female finisher, clocking in at 21:46.

The King's 5K Run is sponsored by the college's International Business and Economics Club. Proceeds from the event go to Ruth's Place, a women's shelter that helps homeless women and women with needs. Ruth's Place president, Bill Bolan, said the organization also helps women find permanent housing.
