Red Cross carries on amid flak

NEW YORK — The American Red Cross said Sunday it understands the criticism regarding its sometimes slow-moving response to Superstorm Sandy in the New York City region.


It's a burden that comes with being the nation's largest private relief agency, and Red Cross officials' pride in their work is constantly coupled with promises to do better next time.


We expect people to have high expectations of us ... It keeps us on our toes, said Red Cross CEO Gail McGovern.


The most notable criticism came Thursday from the top elected official on hard-hit Staten Island.


Borough President James Molinaro termed the Red Cross response at that stage a disgrace and urged people not to donate to it.


As of Sunday, however, storm-related donations to the Red Cross had reached $85 million.
