WILKES-BARRE - A mother charged with covering up a deadly shooting her teen son was involved in appeared in Luzerne County court Friday for an expected guilty plea.
Angelina DeAbreu, 31, of Stroudsburg, appeared before Judge David Lupas on charges of corruption of minors, tampering with evidence and making false reports, but did not enter a guilty plea to any charges.
Her attorney, Tom Marsilio, requested time to gather evidence in the case.
Lupas scheduled a pre-trial hearing for Dec. 19.
Court papers allege DeAbreu hid a firearm while her son, Elijah Yusiff, 14, hid shell casings in a pile of scrap mental behind a 119 Hill St. home involving the shooting death of 14-year-old Tyler Winstead.
Investigators say Winstead was shot on April 5 inside DeAbreu's 117 Hill St., Wilkes-Barre, home when Yusiff removed a .22-caliber revolver from a book-shaped case. Winstead was sitting on a bed in DeAbreu's bedroom when Yusiff turned with his finger on the trigger, according to court papers.
The gun discharged and a bullet struck Winstead in the chest, killing him.
Yusiff appeared on unknown charges earlier this week in juvenile court. Proceedings relating to his case are closed to the public because of the nature of the charges and his age.
