DALLAS TWP. -- Residents from Dallas Township and members of the planning board met with Jack Varaly of Varaly Associates on Wednesday night to begin the process of building a comprehensive plan for the township.

The township hired Varaly to help prepare a plan that maps out the vision for the township's future. The meeting was held to encourage residents to express their concerns and opinions about issues of zoning, housing, land use, natural resources and other topics, and allowed the residents to volunteer for ad hoc committees to help the township in gathering ideas for the plan.

The most important thing that goes into the plan is identifying the vision of what they want the township to become, Varaly said during the public meeting.

The majority of the township is zoned agricultural, he said. He said that when the committee volunteers are considering rezoning, they should expect slow but steady growth, and not the boom that the area has experienced during the last 20 years.

All of the census data for the township is available on the website.

Vice Chairwoman Elizabeth Martin said she would be posting more specific information on what the jobs of the committees will be and some examples of other comprehensive plans so people have a better understanding of the process.

Citizen participation is very important, Martin said.

The township had approximately 10 volunteers for committees during the meeting. Martin said she expects more before the week is out.

The committees will meet approximately once a month, but the times and dates have not been set.

Varaly said the process should take only about three months to complete.

He said the comprehensive plan does not implement any changes, but gives the board of supervisors a direction. Every decision would still have to pass through public meeting before anything is made official.
