UPDATE: KINGSTON - A ruptured underground natural gas line has been capped by UGI crews Monday morning.

Crews from Pennsylvania American Water working on a water line inadvertently ruptured the gas line at Schuyler Avenue and John Street at about 10 a.m., said Kingston EMA Coordinator Tom McTague.

Pressure in the line caused natural gas 30 feet in the air and caused a strong odor of natural gas in the area.

Homes along Schuyler Avenue from Vaughn Street to West Union and on John Street from Wyoming Avenue to Mercer Avenue were evacauted. Many residents left their houses in a hurry without jackets and prescription medications.

Students at the nearby Schuyler Avenue Elementary School were evacauted to Thomas' Family Market on Wyoming Avenue, and then bussed to the Chester Street Middle School where parents can pick up their children.

Nearby businesses, including Bonner Chevrolet and a Senior Center, were forced closed for the time being.

After the ruptured line was capped, UGI crews inspected each residence to vent natural gas from buildings.

McTague said there were no injuries.
