HOLLENBACK TWP. – State police in Hazleton are investigating a case of theft by deception.
Police said the incident occurred after Richard Jensen, 56, of Wapwallopen, lost a bid for a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro SS on eBay – an online auction.
Jensen told police he later received an email telling him that the car was relisted on eBay and provided him a link to what appeared to be an eBay web page. He clicked the link and entered a $9,680 bid on the car, was told he won the bid and directed to wire transfer the money to JP Morgan Chase Bank in Bountiful, Utah.
The suspect advised Jensen the car would be shipped within 10 days, but the car never arrived. Jensen called eBay and was told the car was not an eBay item and that he was scammed.
EBay advises that this scam occurs hundreds – if not thousands – of times each day, and the public is reminded to confirm website purchases with the website directly and not just trust that a website link is legitimate.
An investigation continues.
