WILKES-BARRE ‚?? First the good for GAR in its boys basketball opener Friday night. Junior Isaiah Francis played on a different level most of the game.

The bad. The Grenadiers effort was uneven for the most part and it eventually proved costly.

Drew Sciano‚??s rebound basket with 16.9 seconds left gave Delaware Valley only its second lead of the game, but it was enough to top GAR 49-48.

‚??I thought it went well except for the turnovers,‚?Ě said Francis, who finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. ‚??We had a couple in the clutch. That wasn‚??t good.‚?Ě

The biggest turnover came with 32 seconds left after GAR took a 48-47 lead when Lamont Twyman drove and dished to Francis. DelVal worked the clock a bit and missed a shot, but grabbed yet another offensive rebound. Sciano powered the ball into the hoop for the lead. The Warriors‚?? other lead was 47-46 with 1:08 to play.

Sciano missed an ensuing free throw that Francis rebounded. The Grenadiers called a timeout with 13.4 to set up a possible game-winning shot, with Francis as the intended shooter.

But as the Grenadiers worked down the clock, coach Paul Brown noticed they hadn‚??t set up as instructed. He called another timeout a split second before guard James Holmes swished a three-pointer with 3.9 seconds remaining.

The Grenadiers had another crack at the win, but Twyman‚??s shot from deep in the left corner banged off the rim.

‚??First game, I hope we learned a lot from this,‚?Ě Brown said. ‚??We just gave them too many opportunities, and they took advantage of the opportunities we gave them.‚?Ě

At the start, it appeared that GAR‚??s athleticism and quickness would be too much for DelVal. The Grenadiers bumped their advantage to double digits with a minute left in the first quarter. But a baseline drive at the buzzer by DelVal‚??s Brent Fragola ended up being an omen. Over the next three quarters, GAR started and finished the periods flat.
