WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes men's basketball team beat Central Penn 98-88 on Saturday at Scandlon Gymnasium to finish the PNC/Monarch Classic at 2-0.

Chris Shovlin scored a game-high 37 points and added seven assists to lead the Colonels (4-4), who edged Susquehanna on Friday night to open the event, hosted by neighboring King's College.

Fellow guard Tyler Breznitsky turned in another strong performance, finishing with 21 points while Bernard Edmonds added 10 for Wilkes.

Jeremy Hartman turned in a career game with eight points and nine boards.

Susquehanna 69, King's 63 (OT)

King's fell in the final game of the Monarch Classic, losing in overtime to Susquehanna. The Crusaders rallied from six down at halftime and outscored the host Monarchs (5-4) 12-6 in the extra frame.

Kyle Hammonds led King's with 12 points and five rebounds while Tim O'Shea followed with 11 points and four boards.

Chris Hobson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Wilkes 62, Susquehanna 50

The Lady Colonels (6-2) are off to a fast start in their second season under coach Chris Heery, matching their win total from a year ago before hitting the semester break.

Ellen Rich scored a career-high 12 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Elena Stambone finished with 23 points for Wilkes.

Wilkes wins a pair

The No. 23 Colonels came out on top of a tri-match in Middletown, Conn., earning wins over Rhode Island College (34-10) and host Wesleyan (24-16).

Kris Krawchuk (149), Nathan White (165) and Myzar Mendoza (133) all recorded two wins on the day.
