EATON TWP. – A Towanda man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly tried to hire an undercover state police trooper to murder three people.
Police said Craven Michael Vaughn, 32, met with a trooper in the parking lot of the Walmart off state Route 29 in Eaton Township, just outside Tunkhannock, at about 2:45 p.m.
Vaughn provided the trooper money and the names of his intended victims, who reside in Washington and California, and requested that they be killed, police said.
Following the exchange, a traffic stop was conducted and Vaughn was arrested without incident by members of state police in Tunkhannock, police said.
Vaughn was charged with criminal solicitation to commit homicide, criminal attempt to commit homicide, and criminal use of a communication facility. He was arraigned before District Judge David Plummer and committed to the Wyoming County Jail for lack of $250,000 bail.
Assisting in the investigation were the Toop P Vice and Narcotics Unit, the Wyoming County District Attorney's Office and the Scranton office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
HANOVER TWP. – An Edwardsville man escaped from his vehicle after it rolled over and caught fire after a crash on Interstate 81 on Thursday.
Police said Lee M. Kavetski, 32, was driving north on I-81 at about 6 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle near mile marker 161 and the vehicle traveled off the west berm of the roadway and over an embankment, where it caught fire.
WILKES-BARRE – City police are investigating an incident in which shots were fired Wednesday night at the Sherman Hills apartment complex.
While investigating a report of shots fired in the area of Building 332, Darrell Butler told police he was in the area with his friend Donald Jones to see Butler's girlfriend, police said.
Butler told police that they were jumped by four males, that he was struck in his left knee with a baseball bat and that one of the males stuck a firearm in his neck, police said.
Butler told police he then fired two shots in the air from a .32-caliber Kel Tec handgun, for which he had a valid permit. When fleeing the area, Butler said, he dropped the handgun. It was later recovered by police. The incident remains under investigation.
WILKES-BARRE – Gina Paglianite, 45, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing $27.39 worth of merchandise from the Dollar General at 295 S. Main St.,. She was taken into custody after police determined that Paglianite was wanted by the Luzerne County Correctional Facility and state police in Tunkhannock.
