WASHINGTON – As his second term in Congress begins, U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta has been named chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency, federal buildings and plays a major role in economic development and job growth.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced Barletta's appointment Wednesday.

Barletta, R-Hazleton, has served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee since he took office in 2011.

I've enjoyed working with Congressman Barletta on the committee over the past two years, and I look forward to having him as subcommittee chairman, Shuster said. As the former mayor of Hazleton, Rep. Barletta is no stranger to economic development concerns and emergency management issues. He brings a great deal of credibility and experience to his new post.

Barletta, 56, said he was honored by the appointment in only his second term in Congress. Officially, the subcommittee is called the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management

At a time when economic woes and natural disasters are plaguing our country, I am honored that Chairman Shuster has placed his confidence in me to chair this very important subcommittee, Barletta said.

The subcommittee has a wide jurisdiction over federal real estate programs to emergency preparedness and economic development issues such as dealing with distressed cities, Barletta said. He said he will sit down with Shuster to outline the subcommittee's priorities and goals. He declined to discuss his personal goals until after he has met with Shuster.

About the Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management has jurisdiction over the nation's emergency preparedness policy and programs and conducts oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The subcommittee oversees agencies and programs promoting economic development in communities suffering economic distress, such as the Appalachian Regional Commission. The subcommittee also exercises oversight of public buildings, federal real estate programs and the Public Buildings Service of the General Services Administration.
