FREELAND: MMI Preparatory School is holding Bring a Friend to School Day for mid-school students on Tuesday, an Act 80 Day for students in the Hazleton Area School District.


All students in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to bring a friend to school for the day. Their friends will go through the day as an MMI student and learn more about the school, classes and activities. Friends will be part of classes and have lunch with students. Visitors may bring lunch or purchase it in the cafeteria.


Visiting students should be dropped off at the school, 154 Centre St., between 7:40-7:50 a.m. and picked up at 3 p.m. Bus transportation is not available for visiting students.

KINGSTON: Church of Christ Uniting, Market Street and Sprague Avenue, Kingston, is hosting a benefit luncheon for Judy Durso, a lifelong resident and business owner in Kingston, at noon on Jan. 27 in the church's Fellowship Hall.


Durso has been suffering from emphysema for 18 years and requires a lung transplant. Proceeds will help off-set the out-of-pocket expenses not covered by insurance.


Tickets for the luncheon are $10 and may be purchased at the church office or at Super Styles Hair Salon, 545 Northampton St,, Kingston. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door.


MOUNTAIN TOP: St. Jude School is accepting registrations for the 2013-2014 school year for three-year-olds through eighth-grade students from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during regular school days.


The three-year-old program is full days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The four-year-old, pre-kindergarten students may choose either three full days on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or five full-day sessions.


Parents or guardians should bring the students' social security card, birth certificate, immunization records and a non-refundable $100 registration fee.

NEWPORT TOWNSHIP: The Glen Lyon American Legion Auxiliary Post 539 is sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive from 1-6 p.m. on Monday at the post home, 62 Newport St., Glen Lyon.


Donors must be 17 years of age or older and should bring identification, a list of medications and eat a light meal prior to donating. No reservations are necessary and refreshments will be served. There will be free raffles for a vacation and cash awards. Ample parking is available and the site is handicapped accessible. For more information call Lorrie at 736-7177.


WILKES-BARRE: Volunteer mentors are being sought for The Magnolia Project, a program of Volunteers of America, which has been building future leaders among the young women of the area. Candidates must be female, over the age of 18, be able to complete a background check and be available a minimum of 30 minutes per week on a regular basis to talk and encourage an assigned Magnolia girl.


Volunteer mentors must also complete an orientation and training session. Orientation is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday at 60 S. Main Street. This storefront is the program's home base, where most mentoring sessions and events take place. The orientation session will last approximately one hour.


The Magnolia Project also invites girls in grades 9 to 12 to join the program. Through themed, small-group activities, one-on-one mentoring sessions and the popular Saturday Series, the girls gain the skills and insight to embody the program's mission, be fierce, get fiercer.
