Packers' Driver to retire

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Donald Driver is retiring, with a formal announcement planned next week for the Green Bay Packers all-time leading receiver.

The Packers made the announcement early Thursday. In a statement, Driver says he's always enjoyed a special bond with Packers fans, and can think of no better way to retire than to celebrate with them and the Packers organization. Driver will officially retire Feb. 6 at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

Driver finishes as the Packers all-time leader in yards receiving (10,137 yards) and catches (743), and is third behind Don Hutson and Sterling Sharpe with 61 touchdown receptions. He had seven 1,000-yard seasons, also a Packers record for a receiver.

He turns 38 on Saturday.

UFC
Edgar drops down to meet champ Aldo

BURBANK, Calif. — As the first featherweight champion the UFC has ever recognized, Jose Aldo occupies a unique niche in mixed martial arts history.

Frankie Edgar is one fight away from earning a rare distinction of his own when they meet at UFC 156 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Edgar could add the 145-pound title to the 155-pound lightweight belt he once held, putting him alongside Randy Couture and B.J. Penn as the only fighters to win championships in two weight classes.

Yet Edgar is an underdog again in his seventh consecutive UFC title fight, while the dominant Aldo faces arguably his toughest test as a champion after fighting just once in 2012.

The undercard of the UFC's annual Super Bowl-adjacent show features tests for Rashad Evans and Alistair Overeem.

Beckham joins PSG, will donate salary to charity

PARIS — David Beckham pledged to donate his salary to a children's charity Thursday after signing a five-month contract with Paris-Saint Germain, the latest stop on his globe-trotting career.

The 37-year-old former England captain joined PSG after turning down several other offers and pledging to effectively play for free. No financial details were given as to how much Beckham's salary would be or the name of the charity. The decision was taken early Thursday morning.

It's something we (decided) together, it's one of the things we talked about from the start. But this all happened so quick, Beckham said. I thought what a great idea it would be, that the salary would go to a children's charity in Paris.

Beckham's glamorous career has seen him win titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Jimmy V Week raises nearly $1.6 million

BRISTOL, Conn. — ESPN says the sixth annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research has set a fundraising record by generating nearly $1.6 million in contributions.

The previous record was $1.3 million in 2011. In six years, Jimmy V Week has generated $6.8 million for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the network announced Thursday.

This season's Jimmy V Week — from Nov. 27-Dec. 4 — featured a simulcast of Jim Valvano's speech at the 1993 ESPYS.

BASEBALL
Yankees sign five with invitations to camp

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees have signed outfielders Matt Diaz, Juan Rivera and Thomas Neal, infielder Dan Johnson and catcher Bobby Wilson to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.

The Yankees also announced Thursday they have invited 44 players to camp. Among the group were first-round picks Slade Heathcott, an outfielder from the 2009 draft, and Cito Culver, a shortstop selected in 2010. Top catching prospect Gary Sanchez also is on the list.

Agreements with Rivera, who played for the Yankees from 2001-03, and Diaz were previously reported. The Yankees will be Bobby Wilson's third team this offseason. He was released in October by the Angels, and he was not offered a contract by Toronto in December. In 389 career at-bats, he's batting .208 with eight homers and 37 RBIs.
