SUGAR NOTCH – A man facing charges in connection with nine home burglaries this year was hit Tuesday with new charges related to a 10th residential break-in.

Gregory Sean Richards, 24, of Main Street, Sugar Notch, used his driver's license to force open a locked door to a Maple Street house on Feb. 1, according to police. Once inside, Richards ransacked the master bedroom and stole cash and jewelry that he allegedly chopped up and sold at a pawn shop, according to charges filed.

Richards claimed he needed cash to support a heroin addiction, police said.

Richards has been charged by police in Hanover Township, Nanticoke and Sugar Notch for going on a home burglary spree since Dec. 31. Several burglaries, including the Maple Street housebreak in Sugar Notch, occurred during the day.

Richards did not try to conceal the burglary, police said. He allegedly parked in front of the house and knocked on the door. When no one answered, he opened the front door using his driver's license, according to the criminal complaint.

Hanover Township police captured Richards while he was allegedly trying to break into a home on Black Street during the day on Feb. 5.

Richards was arraigned by District Judge Joseph Halesey in Hanover Township on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, theft and receiving stolen property. Halesey set bail at $10,000, resulting in the total bail of $140,000 for all burglary cases.

Court records say Richards is facing burglary-related charges in county court for a home break-in on Main Street, Sugar Notch, on Dec. 24, 2011, breaking into a garage on Woodland Road, Sugar Notch, on June 1, 2012, and stealing jewelry from a house on Smith Court, Ashley, in May 2012.

Richards was free on $25,000 bail when he allegedly burglarized the 10 houses, according to court records.

A preliminary hearing on the latest complaint is scheduled on Feb. 26.
