SWOYERSVILLE – Authorities are investigating the death of a toddler who had been at a home on Warsaw Street on Friday.

Sgt. David Latoski of the Swoyersville Police Department said police responded there with ambulance crews at about 5 p.m. Friday.

A 2-year-old male was taken to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for emergency treatment, said Latoski, but he could not say whether the child died at home or at the hospital. Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said preliminary 911 reports indicate the boy died inside the home.

Salavantis and Latoski refused to speculate about the cause of the child's death. They said they will know more following an autopsy scheduled for 9 a.m. today. Authorities have not released the child's name.

Salavantis has assigned a detective from her office to assist in the investigation, she said. Crime scene investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police also are assisting.

We are investigating to see if there are any criminal allegations attached to this, Salavantis said.

Police believe only the child and his father, Matthew Black, were home at the time of the incident, Latoski said.

Black did not allow police to search the house, prompting police to obtain a search warrant, he said. We had to do a search warrant because he wouldn't cooperate, Latoski said. …we weren't in that house until well after midnight.

Salavantis said she is praying for the family of the child.

It's a very emotional time, dealing with a child, a 2-year-old that's lost its life, said Salavantis. We will do everything in our power to find out what happened and to help the family at this time as they grieve.
