BETHLEHEM – The Wyoming Valley Conference seems to pick certain weights every year that are stacked.

This year is no different.

That was evident on Friday at the Class 3A Northeast Regional Tournament as seven wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and within one win of advancing to the PIAA Championships. And six of those grapplers are from three weight classes.

Dallas’ Ryan Monk and Coughlin’s Brad Emerick are on opposite ends of the 285-pound bracket semifinals. So are Wyoming Valley West’s Kyle Krasavage and Hazleton Area’s Larry Romanchik at 126, and Crestwood’s Matt Hammerstone and Berwick’s Kevin Laubach at 145. The other semifinalist from the conference is Crestwood’s Dan Ritz at 132.

“This is the easy way, win one and (advance),” Hazleton Area coach Keith Maurer said. “(Hershey’s) the sweetest place on earth.)

Several WVC wrestlers will have to take the hard way trying to win four matches this morning to claim the third-place medal and advance. Action begins this morning at 9:30 with the second round of consolations, while the semis are scheduled to begin at 11 and the finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

For Monk, all season he had to settle for second-best to Emerick. On Friday, he bested the unbeaten Crusader by winning two times to Emerick’s one to move to this morning’s semifinals, which begin at 11.

Monk, a sophomore who struggled in the Class 2A regional last season for the Mountaineers, already surpassed that performance on Friday with two wins at Liberty High School. But now he has to face Nazareth’s Aaron Bradley, who was state runner-up last year at 220 and is ranked highly in the nation.

“I’m just going to wrestle as hard as I can for three periods and give everything I have,” Monk said. “It’s my goal to get to the finals and do everything I can to get there.”

Krasavage (36-0), who like Emerick (35-0) is also undefeated, was challenged early in his quarterfinal match against Easton’s James Saylor as a flurry of points led to Krasavage leading 10-5 after the first period. After that though, he cruised to a 17-8 victory.

“First match at regionals is always going to be the best one so I can only improve from there,” Krasavage said. “It was great (getting tested) I came here to wrestle…the harder the kids I have the better.”

Romanchik was in a similar situation against Southern Lehigh’s Adam Ziegler. The sophomore was in a close match in the first period as the two were countering moves back and forth. But Romanchik turned out to be too much eventually racking up back points for a 9-2 win after getting the initial takedown then turning his opponent for back points.

“I just got to stay focused just take it one match at a time. Can’t look ahead because I got a tough kid ahead of me,” Romanchik said. “If I keep wrestling like I’m wrestling, no reason I can’t contend. Even be there for the final.”

Ritz, who was district runner-up , racked up a pair of victories in which he allowed just two points to each opponent. Like Monk and Romanchik he will see the top seed in his bracket to attempt to reach the regional finals, slated for 6:30 tonight and a berth in the state tournament, which starts Thursday at Giant Center in Hershey.

After wrestling for the WVC and District 2 titles, Hammerstone and Laubach could be on another collision course. Both looked good in their respective matches on Friday. Top-seeded Hammerstone, who handed Laubach his first loss of the season in the district final, defeated Parkland’s Michael Marano 5-3 and will see Easton’s Kyler Kilpatrick in the semis. Laubach, who used a pin in 1:57 and a major decision, to advance, will face Southern Lehigh’s Matt Mirth in the bracket’s final four.

Mirth needed to hold down Valley West’s Cody Cordes in the ultimate tiebreaker overtime period to pull out a 4-3 victory.

“I got hungrier. The monkey’s off my back. It’s time to go get it.” said Laubach on his approach after being hit with his first loss last weekend. “It’s nice to have the motivation for this because this is a tournament that means more.”
