Five wrestlers from local colleges earned spots in the upcoming NCAA Division III tournament with their performances on Saturday at the East Regional Championships held at Gettysburg College.
Wilkes’ Mark Hartenstine (149 pounds) and Kris Krawchuk (157) earned second-place finishes at regionals while teammates Matt Transue (197) and William Fletcher (285) joined King’s sophomore Shane Stark (184) with third-place finishes.
All five will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the national championships, which are held March 15-16.
King’s 10, Susquehanna 5
The Monarchs got four goals from senior midfielder Lenny Fox en route to a non-conference win over Susquehanna.
Fox paced the Monarchs with four points while Kieran McMahon added three points on two goals and Brendan McCrudden tallied the win between the pipes, making 12 saves. Will Torrence took the loss allowing nine goals and making six saves.
Lady Colonels split twinbill
Wilkes followed up a one-hit loss with a one-hit victory, beating York (N.Y.) College 22-5 after losing 8-0 to Frostburg State in the opener. Both games went five innings.
The Lady Colonels exploded for 16 runs in the fifth against York including a Vicki Warne grand slam home run as Haylie Phillips, Alysha Bixler, and Emily McGrath combined to throw a one-hitter while striking out eight.
Laykin Hughes suffered the loss against Frostburg State and accounted for Wilkes’ lone hit in the contest, a single to left field in the third.
Misericordia sets records
The Misericordia track teams set four school records at the ECAC Indoor Championships at the New Balance Armory in New York.
Ashlee Ward tied for third to earn All-ECAC status with a school record in the high jump (1.64m) and Marina Orrson added a school record with a fifth-place finish in the mile (5:02.13).
Steph Grow finished ninth in the 500 with a school record (1:19.60) and Andrew Nelson was 14th at 400 with a record of his own.
