WILKES-BARRE — The crowd was barely a fraction of the one that packed Wilkes University’s Marts Center a few hours early.

The motivation was different, with nothing to play for beyond Saturday’s game.

And firing up the troops took more than one crank of the ignition.

Wyoming Valley West, though, couldn’t muster enough horsepower to keep up with Scranton as the Knights came away with a 59-48 victory and the District 2 Class 4A boys basketball title.

Karlon Quiller and Andrew Moran scored 17 points each to pace Scranton. Jaquan Ingram and Lucky Williams each scored 14 in their final game in Valley West uniforms. Senior captain Brett Good added seven.

The season ended for both teams Saturday. They were eliminated from the District 2-4 Class 4A tournament by Williamsport earlier. Valley West (16-10) lost in the semifinals last Saturday to the Millionaires and Scranton (17-9) fell Wednesday in the title game to give District 4’s Williamsport the only state spot from the subregional tournament.

District 2 came up with the idea of deciding the D2-4A crown on the court rather than handing it to the D2 team that advanced the farthest as in the past when Williamsport won the championship.

The District 2 Class 2A game played earlier packed the Marts Center. The Valley West vs. Scranton game gave everyone plenty of elbow room.

“We were really sluggish earlier on, and I thought the game could have had a better atmosphere than it did,” Scranton coach Tony Battaglia said. “But proving the District 2 champion on the court was the most important thing, and I think the game will gain some momentum as we go forward.”

Valley West was in an odd situation, shutting down the program after the loss to Williamsport since Scranton would have been the D2-4A champion with a win Wednesday against the Millionaires. The Spartans resumed practice Thursday.

“Our attention span was terrible,” Valley West coach George Reimiller said of getting his team back into the gym. “It’s hard when you’re dealing with 16-, 17-, 18-year-olds that are four days off without practice and (you’re) trying to get them motivated. We did the best we can.”

Reimiller, though, was pleased with the effort put forth Saturday, except for the costly turnovers. Scranton was able to snap a 28-28 tie early in the third quarter in part because of them. The Spartans moved within 39-36 on a rebound basket by Ingram with 1:28 left in the third, but a pair of free throws with no time on the clock by Moran triggered a 7-0 run.

Valley West cut a double-digit deficit to 50-43 on Good’s three-pointer at 2:25 of the fourth. Another Scranton burst — this time an 8-0 run — followed to seal the game.
