WILLIAMSPORT — Four Wyoming Valley Conference wrestlers from Class 2A A.J. Luton, Andrew Schutz, Austin Harry and Nick Heck punched their cards and are heading down to Hershey.

A.J. Luton (GAR), Andrew Schutz (Wyoming Area), Austin Harry (Lake-Lehman) and Nick Heck (Wyoming Area) earned spots in the state tournament with their performances on Saturday at the Class 2A Northeast Regional tournament.

Harry led the WVC effort by winning a regional title at 132 pounds. Luton and Schutz finished second at 113 and 126, respectively.

Harry was down to Mifflinburg’s Cole Walter, 6-5, late in the third period of the finals. But Harry made a desperation takedown at the buzzer and dropped Walter to the mat for the winning points.

“It’s the greatest feeling I’ve ever had. I wasn’t sure if I even won. I wrestled to the last possible whistle,” Harry said. “When (the refs) raised my hand, it was the greatest feeling.”

Harry, a state medalist last year, hopes to continuing his success down at Hershey in an attempt to improve on his eighth-place medal.

“Coming from states last year, I’ve been training so hard. I’m at school every morning at 8 doing everything I could,” Harry said. “I just have to keep working.”

Heck, meanwhile, was the only one of the four who had to earn his way from the consolation bracket after dropping an 8-3 decision to Line Mountain’s Seth Lansberry at 138 pounds.

Heck then battled Western Wayne’s Morgan Fuller and Bucktail’s Demetri Probst to a 3-1 decision that landed him a trip to Chocolate Town.

“It feels awesome,” Heck said. “Of course (District 4 is) a lot tougher than District 2. I wrestled the No. 3 and No. 10 ranked wrestlers in the state today.”

Schutz had a tough draw in the finals against Southern Columbia’s Kent Lane, a veteran sophomore with state tournament experience.

“(Lane) surprised me for a sophomore,” Schutz said. “It’s good to get these matches.”

Schutz is glad he has the chance to go down to Hershey for a second time.

“It’s a great feeling. It was a relief going to the finals,” Schutz said. “It’s great to go to states for the second time.”

Luton faced off against District 4 third-place finisher Ethan Calkins of Troy in his championship match. Calkins already made short work of District 4 champ Eric Hunt from Warrior Run before squaring off with Luton.

Luton tied the score late in the third but lost to Calkins in the sudden victory period.
