Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or near March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens and books. Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center in Factoryville was one school in the Abingtons to celebrate Seuss with guest readers and other special events March 1. Mrs. Foley’s 5th grade class was visited by Overfield Township Patrolman James Kearns.
Born Theodor Seuss Geisel, March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass., Dr. Seuss is known for his lyrical and hysterical passages. “The Cat in the Hat,” perhaps one of his most famous pieces was a challenge from a publisher to create an entire book using only 225 words.
