The Wyoming Valley Conference softball coaches will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Dallas High School. All coaches are asked to attend as divisional all-stars will be selected.

EDWARDSVILLE — Holy Redeemer couldn’t ask for a better situation Monday in its first appearance in the state softball playoffs.

Bottom of the eighth of a scoreless game. Bases loaded. No outs. The team’s fastest runner — Chelsea Skrepenak — on third base. And three cracks to get her in.

It took only one.

Alexis Shemanski lifted a sacrifice fly to center, easily scoring Skrepenak and giving the Royals a 1-0 victory over Warrior Run in the first round of PIAA Class 2A playoffs at Wilkes University.

“At that at-bat, my mind was cleared,” said Shemanski, one of four seniors in the lineup. “I had to at least hit it to the outfield. If I hit it to the outfield, I knew Chelsea would come home and it would be all over.”

The other thing that was over was District 4 champion Warrior Run’s season. The Defenders (20-4) were considered a strong favorite to advance to the state title game with eight girls back from a team that was the state runner-up in 2012.

District 2 champion Redeemer (17-0) will have to wait to find out its opponent on Thursday. The Royals will play either District 12 champ Conwell Egan or District 3 runner-up Pequea Valley. Those teams play today after being rained out Monday.

Redeemer didn’t have many scoring chances against Warrior Run pitcher Tay Parker, who lived up to advanced billing. Parker struck out nine, the final one in the seventh being the 899th strikeout of her career. But Skrepenak and Jen Ringsdorf bunted their ways on to start the eighth and Sydney Kotch was then intentionally walked to load the bases.

Shemanski’s fly was deep enough that even a player without Skrepenak’s wheels would have scored with ease.

“I didn’t do anything today,” Redeemer coach Mark Senchak said. “The girls did it all.”

And pitcher Kaya Swanek did it again. The sophomore righty retired the final 11 batters she faced after giving up a one-out double in the fifth. Warrior Run helped her out by doing plenty of first-pitch swinging. Swanek threw only three pitches to retire the side in the eighth.

Warrior Run also hit into plenty of bad luck as three innings ended on non-traditional double plays. Redeemer center fielder Biz Eaton doubled off a runner on second after catching a fly in the right-center gap in the first. Kotch, the shortstop, turned a lineout into a double play in the third. Second baseman Kaitlyn Kaluzny did the same in the fourth.

“Our defense is absolutely stellar,” said Skrepenak, who saw things unfold from her catcher position. “I couldn’t ask for a better team in front of me. All the hard work we put in at practice paid off. And we finally got a chance to prove and show how good it’s been with the level of competition we’ve been playing.”

Redeemer also had some unfortunate luck, hitting into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the first. The Royals had just one runner in scoring position the rest of the way until the eighth.
