Adam Romanowski threw a two-hitter as Greater Pittston moved into third place Friday night when it defeated Wilkes-Barre, 3-2, in a Wyoming Valley League Senior American Legion game.

Eric Walkowiak had two hits. He scored one run and drove in another to help Greater Pittston score all of its runs in the first two innings

Greater Pittston started the day in fourth place and improved to 9-4 to get past Tunkhannock, which suffered a 4-3 loss to WVL leader Swoyersville.

The team was scheduled to play two games Saturday, two more today and one Monday before finishing up the regular season with games against both Mountaintop teams back-to-back on the road Thursday.

Greater Pittston 5, Hazleton 1

Joe Gavenonis threw a four-hitter and went 2-for-3 at the plate Wednesday when Greater Pittston downed Hazleton, 5-1.

“That was one of the best games we played all year,” said Greater Pittston manager Jerry Ranielli, who described the team’s previous effort in a loss to Tunkhannock as one of the worst. “We scored four in the fourth when we played a lot of small ball.”

Bart Chupka provided the highlight of the inning with a straight steal of home.

Tunkhannock 4, Greater Pittston 1

Tunkhannock topped Greater Pittston, 4-1, Monday in a rain-delayed meeting of teams trying to lock up spots in the WVL’s four-team playoff.

The top four teams in the 11-team league make the playoffs.

“We probably have to win three or four of the seven games to get into the playoffs,” Ranielli said.

Back Mountain 3, West Side 1

Corey Lescavage and Justin Steinburger each had doubles Friday, but West Side managed just one other hit in a 3-1 Wyoming Valley League Senior Legion loss to Back Mountain.

Evan Musto, who had a single, twice threw out runners attempting to steal bases to end innings.

Marty Michaels held Back Mountain scoreless for the last three innings in relief.

Swoyersville 5, West Side 3

West Side put the potential tying runs on base in the seventh inning before falling to unbeaten Swoyersville, 5-3, Wednesday.

Ryan Hogan gave Swoyersville a 3-0 lead with a first-inning home run in the game that had its start delayed 45 minutes because of poor field conditions from rain.

Kyle Charney retured from an elbow injury to provide a double and single.

Lescavage, who had two hits, played well defensively at shortstop while Musto again threw out two base stealers from his catcher position.

Ryan Kaslavage pitched well in defeat.

West Side 4, Hazleton 3

West Side produced its first two-game winning streak when Nick Gushka scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 victory over Hazleton June 29.

The previous two West Side wins, including one a day earlier, came against Mountaintop B, the league’s last-place team.

The win over Hazleton was the first by West Side over an opponent with a winning record.

Michaels pitched efficiently to get the win. He retired 12 straight batters at one point and completed the game with just 76 pitches.

Lescavage had two hits and a strong game defensively at shortstop for West Side. Kaslavage, Jeremy Zezza and Steve Homza also had hits.

Youth Recap

Greater Pittston stayed within a run of unbeaten Swoyersville for four innings before falling, 11-0, in six innings Wednesday in a WVL Youth Legion game.

Steve Homza held Swoyersville scoreless for three innings and allowed only an unearned run in the fourth before the league leaders broke loose with two out in the fifth and scored five more unearned runs.

Swoyersville held Greater Pittston hitless.

Greater Pittston split two games June 29, losing to Nanticoke, 4-3, at home in the morning before recovering to defeat Back Mountain, 7-6, on the road at night.

Prep Recap

Greater Pittston clinched no worse than a tie for first place among five Wyoming Valley League teams when it shut out Back Mountain, 5-0, June 29.

The win improved Greater Pittston to 9-0 with three games remaining.
