Retired Wyoming Area Social Studies teacher Barbara Bullions will lead an EF Educational tour to Central and Eastern Europe next summer.

The trip is not limited to Wyoming Area students as dults and students from other schools are welcome. An informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center in room 196. Information may also be obtained by emailing bbullions@gmail.com.

With the Communist era fading into history, students will see how cities once behind the “Iron Curtain” have emerged in the 21st century. The tour will begin in Berlin, Germany where the Brandenburg Gate stands as a symbol of freedom. They will see Checkpoint Charlie and get a feel for what a divided city was like.

They then move to Prague, Czech Republic with a stop in Dresden on the way. In Dresden, students will learn about and witness the remains of the devastation of the Allied bombing in WWII. Prague is known as the “Paris of Eastern Europe” because of its extraordinary beauty.

The third city will be Krakow, Poland, one of the first cities chosen by the United Nations to be a World Heritage site. Students will relate the city to the movie “Schindler’s List.” While there, the group will tour the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. Next, they will cross through Slovakia and the Tatra Mountains to reach Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Budapest straddles the Danube River and is also a World Heritage site. The final stop will be Vienna, Austria, a city that inspired many great composers and was home to Sigmund Freud. Each of these cities is considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. They are layered in history, from early Roman settlements, through the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Austro-Hungarian eras, Nazi occupation, Communism and today’s thriving capitalism. A tour of each city is a lesson in politics, architecture and culture.
