Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins play-by-play announcer Mike O’Brien will be the principal apeaker at the autumn breakfast meeting of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Oct 25 at St. Anthony’s Parish Center, 28 Memorial St., Exeter.


O’Brien enters his third season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and his first as the team’s play-by-play announcer and Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations.


In his first two years with the Penguins, O’Brien served as color commentator for the team’s radio and television broadcasts.


Prior to joining the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, O’Brien spent the 2010-11 season as a play-by-play announcer for the men’s ice hockey teams at Boston College and St. Lawrence University and the men’s and women’s teams at Neumann University in Aston.


A native of Gladwyne, O’Brien began his broadcasting career in 2003 with the Trenton Titans of the ECHL, with whom he called the team’s 2005 Kelly Cup Championship run. He was also selected as a radio broadcaster for the 2006 Rbk ECHL All-Star Game.


He moved on to the American Hockey League in 2007 where he was hired as the Lowell Devils’ Director of Media Relations and Team Services. He provided color commentary during the 2008-09 season before taking over play-by-play duties for the 2009-10 campaign and calling the Devils’ first-ever appearance in the Calder Cup playoffs.


O’Brien, 36, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Boston College in 1999. He currently resides in Scranton.


Gina Miscavage, of Jenkins Township, is serving as general chairperson of the breakfast.


She is a member of the Pittston Tomato Festival Committee, board member of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce and Women’s Business Network, board member of the Greater Pittston YMCA, Greater Pittston YMCA Membership and Marketing Committee and a member of Wilkes-Barre POWER!
