District mews


The Pittston Area School District will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.


In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Pittston Area School District will hold an early release on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Dismissals will be as follows: High School, noon; Middle School, 12:30 p.m.; and the Intermediate and Primary Centers, 1 p.m. The district will then be closed from Thursday, Nov. 28 through and including Monday, Dec. 2. Schools will reopen on Tuesday, Dec. 3 according to their regular schedules.


High school news


The ICE Club will host Food Night in the high school cafeteria on Thursday, Nov. 21. Cost for adults is $8, students $6. Children under 5 years of age eat free. The event is open to the public. There will be food served from 12 different countries, along with a bake sale and basket raffles.


Middle school news


Builders Club: The Middle School is Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF again this year. Students may return their collections to Mrs. Martin or Mr. Struckus no later than tomorrow.


Book Fair: The Martin L. Mattei Middle School will hold its annual book fair in the Library from Thursday, Nov. 14 through Wednesday, Nov. 20.


Veterans’ Giving Tree: The Martin L. Mattei Middle School’s sixth-grade teachers would like to ask for your assistance in supporting veterans during the holiday season by participating in a Veterans’ Giving Tree Drive. In order to participate, bring one or more of the items listed below to school. Donated items will be given to veterans at the VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.


• Body wash (no bar soap)


• Denture adhesive and denture cleaner


• Deodorant


• Hair brushes and combs


• Lip balm


• shampoo and conditioner (plastic containers)


• Tissues (small individual size)


• Sunglasses and sunscreen


• Books (large print)


• Colored pencils for drawing


• Deck of cards (large print)


• Postage stamps


• Puzzle books (large print)


• Current issues of magazines


• New hats, robes, t-shirts, and wheelchair bags


• Telephone cards


• Travel-size shaving cream


• Cards (birthday, get well, thinking of you, sympathy)


Please bring unwrapped donations to any sixth-grade classroom.


Intermediate Center news


Any student involved in the talent show is reminded that practices are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays in the Middle School cafeteria. Transportation arrangements are to be made prior to each practice. Dress Rehearsal is at 5;15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in the Pittston Area High School auditorium. Students will be finished rehearsing by 6 p.m. The talent show is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 in the Pittston Area High School auditorium. Students are asked to report at 6:15 p.m.


Lunch with Leonardo: A student at the IC has a chance to win “Lunch with Leonardo,” the Leo Club mascot on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Chances for the lunch will be 50 cents each or three for a $1. Chances will be sold on Nov. 12, 13 and 14 in the lobby during lunch time.


Picture tetakes: Any student who did not get their picture taken or would like a retake can do so on Friday, Nov. 22. Please contact the school or send in a note to your child’s teacher.


The PTO will distribute Gifts-n-Things purchases from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 15 in the IC lobby.
