HANOVER TWP. — A social studies teacher at Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School was charged Tuesday with performing a lewd sex act on a student.
Edward M. Evans, 33, of Main Road, Hanover Township, surrendered at the office of District Judge Joseph Halesey on two counts of institutional sexual assault. He was released on $20,000 unsecured bail.
A male student, 18, told police Evans had given him advice and guidance while he was at school. The two exchanged phone numbers as the student asked Evans about HIV testing.
The student claimed Evans picked him up on March 10, and they went to Evans’ house where Evans gave him paperwork about sexual transmitted diseases. While in a bedroom, the student alleged Evans kissed him and they performed oral sex on each other, according to the criminal complaint.
The student said Evans told him not to tell anyone, the complaint says.
Evans allegedly told police he had been giving the student guidance for several months, and the student asked him about sexual transmitted diseases, HIV and testing procedures. Evans said the student called him and requested information about HIV testing. Evans picked the student up, returned to his house and gave him advice and paperwork, according to the complaint.
Evans claimed they were in his house for a short time before driving the student back home.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Jan. 22.
