Pittston Area will live to see another day.
A match against Wyoming Valley West stood in its way in the opening portion of the District 2 Team Tennis Tournament, which kicked off Friday.
The Patriots, led by three singles wins, came out with a 4-1 win over the Spartans to move on to the first round of the tournament. Pittston Area (7-5) will play at Delaware Valley (12-2) at 3 p.m. Monday.
Trent and Tyler Woodruff made quick work of Wyoming Valley West’s Pat Antall and Dan Miller in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively.
Trent was a 6-2, 6-0 winner, while brother Tyler took down Miller 6-2, 6-2. No. 3 player Terry Briggs garnered a hard fought second set, 7-5 win to pull out a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Spartan Dan Taren.
With the singles, and the match, decided without the need for doubles, Pittston Area’s Michael Antal and Troy Platukus earned an 8-5 win, while the team of Christian Charney and Johnathon Durling took Pittston Area’s only loss.

Wyoming Area 2
Tied at two matches each, the team of Katie McGuire and Evan Spear earned the win in the last doubles match to give MMI Prep a 3-2 WVC boys tennis victory over Wyoming Area Monday.
Nick Vilov and Jonathan Smith earned singles wins for the Preppers.
The Warriors’ effort was led by a singles win from Mike Wrebin, and a doubles win from Aaron Carter and Tom Rose.
Six Wyoming Valley Conference teams are among the 14 schools entered in the District 2 Boys Team Tennis Championships, which opend Friday with Class 3A play.
The 3A tournament is a subregional with District 4. Pittston Area took down Valley West (6-6) in opening round action Friday. The winner advances to play No. 3 seed Delaware Valley in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Hazleton Area (10-1) is the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Cougars await the winner of Monday’s match at Delaware Valley for a semifinal Tuesday at Kirby Park. Abington Heights (14-0) is the No. 1 seed and will face one of Williamsport, Wallenpaupack or North Pocono (all 9-5) in the other semifinal.
The District 2 Individual Tournament is set to begin Thursday at Kirby Park.
