With graduation season quickly approaching, the Back Mountain Memorial Library is ready to help students and their families with the often overwhelming task of planning for college.


The library will hold a free “Strategies for College Planning” program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8. Family members with an interest in learning the best tips for guiding students through the maze of pre-college planning are welcome to attend this program. Pre-registration is required and may be made by calling the library at 570-675-1182.


The FAFSA form will be discussed, as well as other information to maximize the amount of financial aid a student is eligible to receive. Even if your family is not eligible for need-based aid, we will cover the best strategies on how to pay for college on the most tax efficient basis, without it putting a strain on the rest of your finances.


In this workshop, you will learn:


• How to increase your tax deductions and tax credits


• How to select colleges that will provide the best financial aid packages


• How to send your child to an expensive private university for less than a state school


• Which assets are taken into consideration when the U.S. Department of Education calculates your family contribution


• How to pay for college in a failing economy without relying on 529 plans, expensive private student loans or raiding your retirement accounts


• How to get ahead by developing a customized plan to meet all the college costs you will incur as a family


After classes are over for the year and your initial college plans are in place, it’s time to relax and get ready for summertime fun.


AUCTION FEVER


Mark your calendars now for the 68th Annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction to be held this year on July 10, 11, 12 and 13 at the library grounds, 96 Huntsville Road, Dallas.


There is no better way to get ready for “auction fever” than to attend the annual Auction Kick-off Dinner and Mini Auction. The dinner will be held on Monday, June 2 at the Apple Tree Terrace at Newberry Estates in Dallas.


The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by the dinner and mini auction at 7 p.m. The dinner will be buffet-style and will include a grilling station, featuring carved flat iron steak with horseradish sauce, Chicken Marsala and shrimp-encrusted cod with lemon sauce. Other choices will also be available at the pasta station and dessert station.


The cost of the dinner, which is open to the public, is $24 per person.


Reservations can be made at the library by Friday, May 23.


Remember it’s never too early to donate items for the annual auction and the library is especially looking for antiques, nearly olde collectibles, gently-used furniture, jewelry and household items. You never know what you’ll find at the auction.


Students needing community service hours may contact the library to sign-up to help during the set-up of the auction. Set-up volunteers are needed on July 6, 7 and 8. Many volunteers (ages 12 and up) are needed and there is sure to be some area that could use a helping hand. Call the library at 570-675-1182 for more information.


READING PROGRAM


Reminder to parents: The library will hold the “PA One Book Every Young Child 2014 Special Program” at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7 in the Children’s Room. This fun event will include stories, songs, fun activities and a free paperback book for every family. This year’s featured title is “Stripes of All Types” by Susan Stockdale. Pre-registration is required by calling the library.


WORKSHOP


There are also still several openings in the six-week workshop, “Truth in Fiction” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10 and 17 at the library. Register for the remaining sessions in this free series taught by instructor Alyssa Waugh and learn what defines good fiction. Real fiction might sound like an oxymoron, but the best novels resonate because they trigger within us something true and profound.


BOOK DISCUSSION


The library’s Thursday Morning Book Discussion Group will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 15 to discuss its currently selected book, “My Beloved World,” by Sonia Sotomayor. New members are always welcome. Call the library for more information.
