(AP) Famed for its beaches, cruises and cafecitos, South Florida is angling to become one of the nation's next tech hot spots by leveraging its role as the gateway to Latin America.
The Miami region has long pinned its financial fortunes on real estate and banking. But investors say the recent recession, growth in cloud computing and the rapid expansion of mobile devices in Latin America makes it the right time to diversify. Add to that mix homegrown industries like health care, which are ripe for tech-based enhancements.
Civic and business leaders hope the combination will also lure northern entrepreneurs tired of high costs and cold winters. But creating a Miami tech scene won't happen overnight. Miami still lacks the big investors and enough companies to attract big talent.
