The re-election of President Barack Obama has created an atmosphere of certainty for the health care industry, according to an official with a Pennsylvania organization that advocates for hospitals and health care industry clients throughout the state.

Michael Strazzella, senior vice president for federal relations for The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, told reporters on a conference call Wednesday more issues will need to be addressed regarding the state of health care and compensation in the country, but the Affordable Care Act is a good start.

Obama's re-election will end the past two years of threats by opponents to repeal the law.

While local hospitals and health insurers have maintained they've been moving forward with implementing portions of the law by the deadlines spelled out within the act, Strazzella said the election and subsequent statements by a top GOP leader give his group's members a certain peace of mind.

When Speaker (of the House John) Boehner says ‘It's the law of the land,' and he doesn't anticipate further actions to repeal it, it provided some certainty that we will have another four years of this bill, Strazzella said.

And one official with a local health insurer hopes government will move forward while keeping the focus on health care costs.

As Congress and the president continue to debate health care policy over the next few years, Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania urges lawmakers at the national level to turn attention to policies that address the long-term ability to control escalating health care costs, said Kimberly J. Kochler, vice president of government affairs for the Wilkes-Barre based health insurer, in a guest editorial that appears in today's Times Leader.
