WYOMING – Former President Jimmy Carter has been scheduled to speak at the Wyoming Monument in late May – the third time a U.S. president has appeared at the landmark.

A press conference detailing the former president's visit will be held Thursday at the municipal building, said Wyoming Mayor Bob Boyer

As mayor, I am very proud to announce that President Jimmy Carter will visit our town and speak at the Wyoming Monument, Boyer said when contacted Friday. This event will be held in cooperation with the Wyoming Monument Association and Larry and Diane Cook of Cook & Cook Estate Liquidators.

President Rutherford B. Hayes spoke at the monument in 1878 and President Teddy Roosevelt was there in 1905, Boyer said.

The monument commemorates the bloody Revolutionary War-era Battle of Wyoming of July 3, 1778, during which 277 area residents were killed. Remains of the dead are interred at the site.

In November 2011, the Cooks, along with Ben Kasmark and Malcolm Kosek, of Kasmark & Marshall Stained and Leaded Glass Co., delivered a custom 3-by-6-foot stained-glass window that was installed above the front entrance of the Plains Historic Inn in Plains, Ga. – Carter's hometown. At the center of the window is the presidential seal.

In April 2011, the Cooks and auction house co-owners Annette and Mark Parmelee hosted an auction that raised $81,000 for the Plains (Ga.) Better Hometown Program. Carter, 88, and his wife Rosalynn attended the auction that featured some of the couple's personal items, books and works of art.

The event was billed as the Plains Helping Plains Auction because it was held at the auction house on Carey Street in Plains Township.
