CONYNGHAM TWP. — Jacqueline Savage stood about 50 yards away from her trailer home, surrounded by neighbors and her children Saturday as firefighters from six Mountain Top fire companies doused the last flames that destroyed the structure.

Firefighters initially responded around 11:30 a.m.

Savage had stepped out for about 15 minutes while her landlord, Tom Andreas, worked on the furnace, Savage said. She returned to see smoke billowing from her trailer along Fire Hall Road, she said.

“It took about five minutes for it to go from smoke coming out the windows to it being totally engulfed in flames,” Savage said.

Neighbors Joe and Diane Guziak said they were returning home from shopping when they saw smoke and flames through the trees.

Dorrance Township, Hobbie, Slocum Township, Nescopeck, Rice Township, Pond Hill firefighters, as well as Pond Hill and Slocum ambulance associations, responded to the scene.

Savage watched firefighters trudge through slosh made by accumulating snow and running hose water on the softened March soil.

Mary Balliet, Pond Hill Ambulance Association captain and neighbor to the Savages, said the association will hold a clothing drive to collect necessities for her displaced neighbor. For information, contact Balliet at 379-1261.
