WILKES-BARRE — City police recently reported the following:
• Two children were taken for medical treatment at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Saturday after they were found walking on Jones Street barefoot and with what appeared to be vomit on their clothing.
The children were taken into a home on Essex Lane and said they could not wake up their father who was sleeping upstairs in their residence. Police entered the residence shortly after 4:30 p.m. through an open back door and saw that there was food and garbage on the floor. They went upstairs, where the found David Carter in the corner of the main bedroom.
After several minutes, Carter said he was chewing on two Fentanyl patches. He was taken to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for further medical evaluation. Police said they found the package wrappers for the drug in the garbage in the kitchen.
A Children and Youth case worker was assigned to the case and Carter will be charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children.
• Fletcher Harris of South Franklin Street will be cited with harassment after he was involved in a verbal altercation with his live-in girlfriend around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The woman said Harris choked her and struck her in the face with a paper-towel holder. Harris fled the residence before police arrived and was not located during a search of the area.
• Alan Spickerman of West River Street attempted to stab his brother at their residence around 8 p.m. Friday, police said.
The brother, who was not identified, had been helping his mother with chores when Spickerman came home highly intoxicated. Spickerman asked his brother a number of times to help him with a task, but the brother refused because he was busy. Spickerman came out of the kitchen with a large kitchen knife, threatened to stab his brother and lunged at him. Spickerman than threw the knife, nearly hitting his brother in the torso.
Spickerman fled the residence and was located on West River Street. Police said he showed signs of intoxication and was taken to police headquarters to await charges of simple assault, harassment and public drunkenness.
HANOVER TWP. — Drug agents with the Luzerne County Drug Task Force and state Office of Attorney General seized about 400 heroin packets and arrested a man in the raid at a residence in Korn Krest on Saturday.
Modesto Moreno, 24, of New Jersey, was charged with two counts each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance, and one count each of delivery of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of communication facility. He was arraigned by District Judge Joseph Halesey in Hanover Township and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $300,000 bail.
Agents said the heroin packets were stamped “King Kong” and had a street value of about $8,000.
A cell phone and $592 were also seized in the raid.
Kingston police Narcotics Unit assisted in the investigation.
HAZLETON — A Hazleton man was charged Monday with a slew of misdemeanor counts related to driving drunk, as well as one felony count of attempting to flee from an officer.
Dimas A. Chaparro, 49, was arraigned before District Judge James Tupper after he collided head-on with another vehicle on West 1st Street in Hazleton after a police chase around 9 p.m. Sunday, police said in arrest papers.
Chaparro resisted officers and ignored commands to stay in his SUV and raise his hands At one point an officer had to order him to the ground with his firearm drawn, police said. While being handcuffed, Chaparro admitted he had drunk several beers before driving, police said.
One empty 25-ounce can of beer was found in Chaparro’s vehicle and another half-empty can was in the cupholder, police said.
Chaparro was jailed for lack of $5,000 bail. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 16 before district Judge Joseph D. Zola.
