SALEM TWP. – One of the two reactors at PPL’s nuclear power plant near Berwick was disconnected from the power grid on Saturday for scheduled refueling and maintenance, according to a news release.

While the Unit 1 is shut down, workers will replace about 40 percent of the uranium fuel and complete several equipment maintenance tasks and upgrades, the release said.

The plant also will be investing millions to upgrade equipment with state-of-the-art technology and to perform thousands of routine maintenance tasks that keep the plant in good condition.

The work is scheduled at this time of the year when seasonal temperatures result in a lower demand for electricity.

Each of the two units is taken out of service for such maintenance every 2 years.

Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.
