(AP) The devastated mother of a 32-year-old football fan who fell to his death from a pedestrian overpass outside Candlestick Park says her son had been tailgating and drinking beer with his brother and friends but was not too inebriated to walk.

Janet Hayes said Wednesday that Kevin Hayes, a lifelong 49ers fan, had walked up a ramp with his hand on a rail and was turning onto a staircase where the rail was lower when he slipped and fell on Sunday.

She said her son was supposed to be the best man at his brother’s wedding this weekend.

The family has had 49ers season tickets since 1946.
