(AP) A Texas man has been put to death for killing his parents at their Lubbock home 15 years ago during a drug-influenced rampage that also left his 89-year-old grandmother dead.
The execution of 43-year-old Michael Yowell was carried out Wednesday evening in Huntsville after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal contending Texas’ use of a new supply of pentobarbital as the execution drug could cause unconstitutional pain and suffering.
Texas and other states are using drugs purchased from a compounding pharmacy after traditional manufacturers have refused to make their products available to state prison agencies for use in capital punishment. Compounding pharmacies custom-make medications but are not subjected to strict federal scrutiny.
Evidence showed Yowell, an ex-convict, stole from his parents to support his drug addiction.
