John Quinn was elected Wilkes-Barre Area School Board President and Louis Elmy vice-president Monday night along a 5-4 split that has developed on many issues in the board
Quinn and Lynn Evans were nominees for president while Elmy and James Susek were proposed for vice president. Quinn and Elmy were joined by Dino Galella, Phil Latinski and John Corcoran in electing the two, who replace MaryAnne Toole as president and Lynn Evans as vice-president. Toole, Evans, Susek and Christine Katsock, often in the majority until recent months, voted for Evans an Susek to fill the posts.
The same split occurred at the November meeting when the new majority voted to appoint Bernard Prevuznak, an in-house candidate and long-time deputy superintendent,, as superintendent. Toole contended it was a surprise because the boad had contracted the Pennsylvania School Boards Association to conduct a search that had yeilded about 17 candidates. Toole said several had been interviewed but the board had not deliberated on the choice. Corcoran countered that the board had completed the process and Prevuznak was the best candidate.
The new majority also approved a long-awaited hiring policy at last month's meeting, after amending it to increase the maximum number of finalists for a position from three to five. Both the vote on a superintendent and the hiring policy were not on the written agenda at that meeting.
Elmy was then nominated and unanimously approved as contact for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. Susek and Latinski were unanimously approved as board representatives on the Joint operating Committee that runs the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technology Center. The Center serves five districts, with the JOC comprised of representatives from those district school boards
The board also unanimously agreed to hold regular meetings on the second Monday of each month at 6;30 p.m., with a committee meeting at 5:30 p.m.
The board adjourned and will reconvene shortly for it's first regular meeting with the new officers.. There are several positions on the agenda, ;including acting principal, assistant principal and two 20-hour teacher associates, on the agenda with the place for names left blank.
