NANTICOKE – Two numbers stood out Wednesday night. The amount of points the Nanticoke Trojanettes allowed and the amount of turnovers Western Wayne had.

They nearly matched.

Nanticoke’s defense proved too much for the Wildcats as the Trojanettes advanced in the District 2 Class 3A girls basketball tournament with a 39-25 victory.

Fourth-seeded Nanticoke (17-7) will play fifth-seeded Pittston Area (21-3) on Saturday at a site and time to be announced. Western Wayne, the 13th seeded, finished its season at 12-11.

Kayley Schinski led Nanticoke with 19 points and Lauren Rinehimer added 12. Overall, though, the Trojanettes didn’t shoot well as they were 13-of-49 (27 percent) from the field.

Western Wayne was even worse, hitting just 9-of-40 shots (23 percent). The Wildcats’ woes were compounded by 24 turnovers.

“Defensively, that was the name of the game for us,” Nanticoke coach Alan Yendrzeiwski said. “Our girls did a fantastic job.

“We knew the Carmody girls were their two top players and we wanted to make everything difficult for them. I thought for the most part we did a good job at that.”

Rebecca Carmody had a team-high nine points and Rachael Carmody had two. The duo did most of its damage on the boards where Western Wayne had its only advantage.

Nanticoke had several chances to build on the lead it took for good on the third basket of the game. The Trojanettes eventually began to pull away in the third quarter, building their advantage to 13 points. Western Wayne cut the deficit to 28-20 early in the third before an 11-3 Nanticoke run sealed the victory.

“It was very relieving,” Schinski said, “but we practiced very hard for this game because we knew it wasn’t going to be a breeze.

“We could have pulled away (early), but I guess we were a little shook up. But we did execute some of our plays and that’s what kept us up in the game.”
