EXETER — The first quarter ended and the scoreboard told an ugly tale. Five points for Nanticoke. Four for Pittston Area.

No, this one wasn’t going to come easy.

But on an afternoon where most every bucket was a struggle, Pittston Area’s Allie Barber broke through the defensive fog. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 17 points and lifted the Patriots to a 39-26 win over the Trojanettes in the District 2 Class 3A quarterfinals on Saturday at Wyoming Area.

The fifth-seeded Patriots will take on No. 1 Scranton Prep in a Wednesday semifinal, with the winner clinching a spot in the state tournament.

“Allie Barber had a great game. She carried us today,” Pittston Area coach Kathy Healey said. “The last game (against Nanticoke) she had 22. We were watching tapes and we thought that maybe they couldn’t stop her again.”

Indeed, Barber’s nine first-half points nearly matched Nanticoke as a team, as the Patriots took a 15-10 lead into halftime.

Strong off the dribble, Barber was able to score and draw fouls while driving the lane, picking up eight points in the second quarter. She added six in the fourth to help put the game away.

Fourth-seeded Nanticoke was able to clamp down on Patriots leading scorer Mia Hopkins, holding the Monmouth recruit to a season-low four points and just one trip to the foul line.

“We felt good about our matchup with her. We have somebody athletically who can match up with her in (Brittany) Sugalski,” Nanticoke coach Alan Yendrzeiwski said. “I’ll be really honest – our concern was really stopping penetration, mainly with Barber.

“And she killed us tonight. That’s the difference in the game, if you ask me.”

Pittston Area’s defense played a big role as well, holding the Trojanettes under 10 points in each quarter.

The positive vibes on defense were enough to give the Patriots a boost headed into halftime.

“That was huge for us,” Healey said. “We only scored 15, but I knew in the second half our shots were going to start to drop.”

Patriots guard Liz Waleski was the only other player in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Playing in her final game for Nanticoke, senior Kayley Schinski led the team with eight points.
