CORPORATE LADDER

Patrice Persico was named board chairman at a recent organizational meeting for the institution’s board of directors. She will serve a three-year term. Persico is the director of the Family Business Forum at King’s College and is also a member of the board of directors of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce and Maternal and Family Health Services. She is also the chairperson of the regional advisory committee for the Commonwealth Medical College.

Catherine Thayer, Msc.D., of Pocono Lake, was recently hired by the resort as a convention services sales specialist. Her duties include coordinating corporate banquet functions, conventions and weddings. Thayer has more than 30 years of experience in the wedding and hotel industry and is the former owner/operator of It’s A Piece of Cake Bakery. An ordained minister, she received her doctorate degree from the University of Sedona.

HINERFELD COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE

Marilee Barone recently joined the Scranton company as a sales associate. Barone has more than 20 years experience in the areas of sales, leasing, management and construction and has been a member of the National Association of Realtors and the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors since 2005. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Scranton.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON

The higher learning institution recently appointed two new assistant vice presidents.

James Devers, of West Pittston, is the assistant vice president for facilities operations at the school. He will oversee all university facilities, academic buildings and residence hall operations, grounds care and landscaping, and construction, renovations and facilities project management. An architect by trade, Devers is a magna cum laude graduate from The University of Scranton and also holds an associate’s degree from Luzerne County Community College. He is a member and past president of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers and a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Facilities Directors.

Robert J. Thomas, of Swoyersville, is the assistant vice president for finance. Thomas is a Certified Public Accountant and has experience in public accounting. He holds a bachelor’s degree from King’s College and is currently pursuing an MBA at The University of Scranton. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers.

PA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

Michael Klopotoski, a 25-year veteran of the Department of Corrections, was recently appointed regional deputy secretary. He oversees operation of 15 state prisons, 10 of which are located in the eastern region and five in the western region. A graduate of John S. Fine High School, Nanticoke, Klopotoski holds an associate’s degree in general studies from Luzerne County Community College and a bachelor’s degree in government from King’s College.

Jerome W. Walsh, of Wyoming, was recently named superintendent of the State Correctional Institution at Dallas. He will oversee the complete operation of the state prison, which employs more than 700 individuals and houses nearly 2,200 inmates. Walsh holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Wilkes University and a master’s degree in social work from Marywood University.

TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT

Paul Wodarczyk was recently named supervisor of the Manufacturing Engineering Branch, Production Engineering Directorate at the depot. In this position, he supervises more than 40 electrical and mechanical engineering employees who support the communications–electronics systems production missions. The Crestwood High School graduate holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from Wilkes University.

PA OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

Governor Edward G. Rendell recently announced the following local confirmations by the Senate, as well as nominations and appointments that he has made:

Matthew C. Rader, of Forty Fort, was appointed to the State Board of Auctioneer Examiners.

Murray Ufberg, of Kingston, was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.

Mollie O’Connell Phillips, of Kingston, was reappointed to the State Board of Education.

The Hon. Joseph E. Gurzenda, of McAdoo, was reappointed to the State Tax Equalization Board.

Daniel G. Guydish, of West Hazleton, was reappointed to the State Tax Equalization Board.

THE METZ GROUP

Michael Gallagher, of the Back Mountain, was recently promoted to the position of director of information technology for the Dallas-based company which is one of the top 25 dining and environmental management companies in the United States. Gallagher holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from The Pennsylvania State University. He is also a graduate of Leadership Wilkes-Barre.
