LUZERNE COUNTY — The Apprise Program, sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging, is seeking volunteers to train in assisting area elders.

Volunteer counselors participate in an extensive training program and can assist with presentations at various organizations and health fairs and a variety of other tasks.

LUZERNE/WYOMING COUNTIES — Volunteer Senior Peer Counselors are available to provide one-to-one support and socialization in the homes of those 60 years of age and older experiencing loneliness or minor emotional issues.

Volunteers, 55 and older, who drive and can devote up to three hours a week are needed to visit older adults with mild emotional issues in Luzerne and Wyoming counties.

PITTSTON — The Pittston Active Adult Center, 441 N. Main St.: Jan. 1: center closed in observance of New Year’s Day; Jan. 9, 11 a.m.: Mary Kaye Delia from CEO will present a series of four nutrition classes. The first class will be “My Plate” with food tastings and gifts/short survey; Jan. 16, 11 a.m.: Mary Kaye Delia from CEO, second nutrition class in series, “Stretching Your Food Dollar,” with food tastings and gifts; Jan. 17, 10 a.m.: Denise Culver from The Association for the Blind will host a glaucoma screening; Jan. 19, noon: celebrate January birthdays; Jan. 23, 11 a.m.: Mary Kaye Delia from CEO, third nutrition class in series, “Food Safety,” foot tastings and gifts; Jan. 25, 11 a.m.: blood pressure screening hosted by Highland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Jan. 29, 1 p.m.: Tea Party; member hostess is Alyce Allardyce; Jan. 30, 11 a.m.: Mary Kaye Delia from CEO, fourth class in series, “Healthy Beverages,” food tastings and gifts/short survey

PLAINS TOWNSHIP — The Plains Senior Citizens Project Head members will meet at noon on Jan. 3 at the Formation Center (Bernardine Hall) at the St. Peter and Paul Church in Plains Township. The host and hostesses for the Jan. 3 meeting are Pat Boncheck, Mike Boncheck, Eleanor Donati, Helen Dula, Stella Cappellini and Sunny Dudock. They are requested to be at the Bernardine Hall by 11:30 a.m. to set up refreshments. Maureen Madga will collect yearly dues of $5 at the meeting. New members 55 and older are welcome to join the group. The group will meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

WILKES-BARRE — The St. Robert Bellarmine Seniors will hold their first meeting of 2018 on Jan. 10. If anyone is interested in joining for a pleasant, social afternoon, call club president Cathy Chernavage at 570-829-5639.
